Wheelchair Vehicle for Carmel

Carmel is an incredible little girl that has AHC which is a progressive and devastating disease.  She was diagnosed in 2017 when she was 3 years old.

Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood is a one-in-a-million neurological disorder caused by a genetic error. It is progressive, meaning over time Carmel will lose more and more abilities, and she will be ever-increasingly dependent on her wheelchair and feeding tube. She had terrible episodes of paralysis, pain, and muscle contractions, and never knows when she wakes up in the morning if this will be the last day she will ever be able to walk, talk, or eat.   Sadly, there is no cure, and Carmel’s life hangs in the pangs of this cruel, cruel disorder.

Sophie is a single adoptive mom to three amazing girls.  Her family was birthed in Zambia, where Sophie lived and worked for several years.   Sophie’s third adoption has been finalized for nearly two years, yet their family is still waiting on a visa for her third daughter.   As a single mother myself, when I think about all that Sophie has on her plate as a single mom to three girls and dealing with all of Carmel’s needs, I am so moved to compassion and compelled to do something.

Wheelchair vehicles that can accommodate Carmel’s needs and the needs of their family are extremely expensive.  Currently Sophie is driving a vehicle with 282,000 miles on it and they are unable to modify the vehicle to accommodate Carmel’s current wheelchair.  Sophie spends so much time breaking down Carmel’s current wheelchair, putting it in her trunk, and transferring Carmel when she is in terrible episodes of paralysis or extreme muscle stiffening (dystonia).    This is very difficult on Carmel and Sophie alike, and definitely not safe to continue doing.

It is my goal as Sophie’s friend to be able to help raise the funds to purchase a wheelchair vehicle for Carmel.   Since Sophie is the sole parent and provider for their family, I want to help lessen the load that is on her shoulders both financially, and physically.

Thank you, in advance.  And remember, no amount is too small!!!
