Our dear friend Grant (The guy on the left) is having a bit of a tough time at the moment.
At 8 he was diagnosed with a very rare condition called "Perthes Disease" (also known as Legg-Calve-Perthes disease) which is a childhood disorder that affects the head of the femur (the ball of the ball and socket joint of the hip). In Perthes disease the blood supply to the growth plate of the bone at the end of the femur (called the epiphysis) becomes inadequate. As a result the bone softens and breaks down (a process called necrosis). Even with surgery, outcomes can vary and and at times results in extreme pain leading to hip replacement towards mid-life.
Sadly, although treated, a hip replacement at 30 and further surgeries to try to stabalise his condition, it has continued to degrade. Now at 34, Grant is faced with life in a wheelchair (that he is unable to afford and a process which the government can only contribute a mere fraction of the cost, while also subjecting him to a wait period of up to 1.5yrs or longer). He is also frequently in extreme pain, often relying on pain killers which impact his ability to work.
To add further insult to injury Grant has since found that councils in Melbourne don't recognise his condition as one that deserves a Disability Parking Permit and he is now in a situation where he unable to make his home business viable because he is unable to get to appointments because of the extreme cost of parking in the city.
But you can help!
We are raising funds to help Grant afford the wheelchair that he so desperately needs to not only pay his bills and put food on the table but to help him have some resemblance of a normal life. His medical expenses have also been quite significant so we want to help with that too.
