—Nkazi Sinandile RN BSN——————————

What started as Covid 19 quarantine has
become a financial and emotional nightmare.

On January 17 My husband and I travelled on an emergency trip to South Africa to visit-our
very sick Son who needs an organ transplant.
I took an emergency unpaid leave
from my newly found nurse job because I was
still on nurse work probation.  I stayed in South Africa for a year from January 17 to January 8 2020 and lost $71,000.00 . I did not qualify for
family or holiday pay.

Upon return to the USA  this year in January I
re-applied at the same local hospital and started re-training/ orientation  on a new unit early
February until Corona Virus Pandemic hit in
March.

I was still on probation which ends in
September this year when all
my hopes to earn decent income and therefore
help not only our sick Son and His family in
South Africa, but other struggling family
members here and affected by Covid 19 in South Africa.

Little did I know that I would lose income again -$6,000.00 per month at $40.00  per hour
excluding hour including shift differential.
I worked full time.

While doing my 12 hour shift in a sub acute
medical unit I received a text message  from the New Mexico Department of Health instructing me to go and get tested for Covid 19 the next
day which was a Saturday. I was to work that
night.

I informed my charge nurse, who told me to stay home and not return to work that night and that She would notify my Supervisor.  The next day I
received an email from my hospital occupational department of Health with instructions to self
quarantine and not to return to work until I get Corona virus results and be examined by the
hospital doctor.

My husband and I went to get tested. While
on quarantine and waiting for Covid test results  I started having intermittent nausea, stomach,
chest congestion and mild pain,  muscle, pelvic,
right hip and generalized body pain,
extreme exhaustion and night sweats.
I called my doctor, who examined  me at the
doctor’s clinic and placed me on sick leave.

On the day I was to return to work I got very sick and called  my nurse supervisor who suggested
that I stay home and to get-tested for
Coronavirus again. I was also instructed by the
hospital occupational health department to
call them with coronavirus test results and not
to return to work till cleared by my treating
doctor. I tested for Covid 19 again and self quarantinedfor the second time.
Two other doctors examined and released me
from work again.

By this time I was losing income at $1,500.00
each week I was away. I don’t qualify for sick or
catastrophic leave pay yet, because my probation at work will be in September.  Due to the fact
that I am not a citizen yet I do not qualify for
social security funds.  I do not think I qualify for unemployment either.

i was wandering why the Department of Health had instructed me and my husband to go get
tested for COVID-19, but soon realized that it
was through contact tracing. Two weeks before getting tested my husband and I had gone to
help a community member who needed us
to buy Him some medicine for high blood
pressure.

Upon arrival at His home He complained that
His feet were very hot, had severe headache and heart that was beating fast. I checked His-heart
rate and blood pressure and both
were abnormal. I suggested that He should to go to emergency room and that We could transport
Him but He refused.  We were in His home for 2 hours and wore masks.  It was not until I was on my second quarantine that We learned that He, His wife and a child had tested positive for Covid..

It will be in the beginning of September after I
complete probation when I will start to qualify
for sick leave and other employment
pay benefits like catastrophic pay.

Co- pay Bills are also piling up!

Losing income including sudden loss of my only
brother in South Africa and other
family members from my husband’s side has
brought a lot of grief and economic suffering,
because the survivors depend on our income for survival. In addition Coronavirus pandemic has
resulted in them struggling for basic necessities
like food.

I am asking for a hand up until I can recover and
return to work.

All contribution sizes matter.

Please feel free to mail donations to Nonkazimlo
Sinandile P. O. Box 93445.  Thank You.

Our Sick Son who needs an organ transplant is
still in South Africa.

RIP my dear brother❤️
