Dorothy, Julio, and Luis's MFA 2

Dorothy Dubrule, Julio Ulises Medina, and Luis Tentindo are MFA candidates in their second year of studies at UCLA's Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance. For the last six months they have been developing individual projects in preparation for their MFA 2 Concert, "what," which is an opportunity to show works in progress and receive feedback from those who attend. While Dorothy, Julio, and Luis have successfully raised funds to cover the cost of food and drink for the reception that will follow the performance and the printing of marketing materials and programs, they need your support in order to compensate their generous, genius collaborators who have been instrumental in creating the ambitious works that will be performed on February 27th.

ABOUT THE WORKS:

In a collaborative project with Samson Klitsner from the Design/Media Arts department, Dorothy Dubrule and dancer Barry Brannum use new technologies to provide audiences with an alternative avenue for perceiving movement through sound.  Dorothy has had the fortune of working with Sarah B. Lund, whose credits include costume design and art direction for Animal Collective and Panda Bear, to create inventive costumes that incorporate the wearable sensors Klitsner has programmed.

Julio Medina has been working with dancer Amanda Sanchez to create a performance that explores gender and power politics in Latino families. His costume designer, Chanele Casaubon, is fabricating gender-bending garments that fuse Mexican, Cuban, and contemporary formal wear.

Luis Tentindo's performance incorporates movement, object-theater, and live-feed video projection in a genre-defying solo that recently was presented, as work-in-progress, at New York City’s Dixon Place. He has been creating a theatrical movement vocabulary based on working with hand-made objects. The piece is a meditation on the poetic/metaphorical layers that are present when one embarks upon a soulful journey.

All three works will be documented by Stephen Gorme, a reputed dance and fashion photographer. The choreographers are thrilled for their work captured by an artist so skilled at translating live action into still images.
