After having a terrible headache for weeks, on Saturday September 15th, the eve of his 60th birthday, Craig went to urgent care to seek relief. He had been in the day before as well but even with the treatment they had given him then , he was confused, vomiting and in excruciating pain. A CT scan was done and showed nodules on the lungs and a hematoma on the brain. Craig was taken by ambulance to the University of Utah Neurology Critical Care Unit.
Meanwhile, Craig’s wife, Jen, returned home for the first time in 3 Days after caring for their 15 year old daughter who had been treated at Primary Children’s Hospital for a skull fracture after fainting at school. Her heart is not functioning properly and they are doing further testing. After getting Her daughter settled, Jen made it in time to the ED to follow the ambulance to the U of U hospital.
Surgery was scheduled for Wednesday to remove the hematoma. Around 3:30am on Monday morning, Jen received the news that the hematoma was hemorrhaging and emergency surgery needed to be performed. The team came out and told the family waiting there for Craig that the tumor was removed, it was malignant and that Craig was in critical condition. These are hard words to hear and even harder words to process. Family makes it more bearable, and there was plenty there in that waiting room. At this point it was a waiting game. Waiting for pathology and for Craig’s recovery.
Craig is still in NCCU. While the entire tumor was removed, there is still blood in the brain cavity close to the brain stem which causes concern but the Dr feels the body can absorb. An MRI revealed that there is trauma caused to the cerebellum which controls motor skills. The extent of the damage is not known. The family is still waiting on answers as to what to expect as far as recovery. Much rehab will be needed.
The immediate worry is the swelling on the brain. He is being watched closely by the neurologists in case they need to go back in to surgery to relieve the pressure.
Family is still waiting to talk to Oncology for more info, however a neurologist did tell Jen that it is Metastatic Melanoma. There are also lesions on Craig’s lungs and it is believed to have started in his GI tract. No plans or discussion as to what this means for Craig have been made yet.
As the family takes each moment at a time and absorbs this information I am hoping we can rally around them in support of prayers and possibly donations no matter how small. With a combined effort perhaps we can take away some of the huge financial burden that will be put on the family. They have so many other uncontrollable stressors right now, please help lessen this one that we can do something about.
