Hi,
My name is Alana and I am 19 years old. As some people might know, I have a service dog named Bridgette. She has been my rock and my best friend for 2 years now. She helps walk when I have joint pain, grounds me when I get dizzy, and comforts me when I am in pain. Although I love her very much, she is already beginning to have trouble in her back and joints. This means she will need to retire from service work within the next couple years.
When I was 11 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. In the last 8 years since it has been a struggle to get my health under control. Although the disease itself is believed to be in remission, I still have daily pain from the damage to my nerves and from the way my surgery was performed over 5 years ago. In addition, I have many side effects and conditions caused by the Crohn’s Disease and the medication for it; I have Spondyloarthritis, Chronic Stomach Pain, Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome, Chronic Nausea, Hearing Loss, Dizziness, Severe Fatigue, and more. I also have conditions that are unrelated to Crohn’s and my other issues. These include Reactive Airways, a Congenital Heart Condition, Migraines, and others.
All of my conditions together cause me to have pain, dizziness, fatigue, and just general difficulty getting through tasks on a daily basis. My current service dog helps me with many of my problems and I am so grateful to everyone who helped me get her. However, she turned out to be much older than the trainer had told me, and this limits the time she can work.
I am raising money so I can get a puppy and train him/her to be my next service dog. This takes about 1-2 years and that is all the time Bridgette has left to work. The new dog will be trained to help me with walking like my dog does now, however, the new dog will be trained to do more. They will be trained to alert me to sounds, to retrieve items, pick up items from the floor, and more.
