Hadeer

On Sunday, June 11, 2017 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted one of the largest raids of Iraqi-Americans, rounding up more than 100 residents in metro Detroit. My uncle, Hadeer Siba, was arrested and has been in their custody since then. Many of those detained, including my uncle, are Catholic and fear deportation to Iraq will jeopardize their lives. He came here when he was just 5 years old and has lived in the United States for the last 41 years. The last 7 months without him have been extremely difficult for my family. He has 3 sons and very ill parents who depend on him. In 2013, we lost my uncle (his brother) Art Siba to cancer. He is all we have left and we are doing everything in our power to keep him here.

The ACLU, CODE LEGAL AID, and other organizations were able to obtain a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against ICE and the Government, which has been extended from Michigan to cover the ENTIRE COUNTRY. Iraqi-Americans detained in Nebraska, Tennessee, California, Illinois, Arizona, Nevada and elsewhere are temporarily covered under the motion that was filed. Most recently, Judge Goldsmith ruled that all detainees would have to be granted bond hearings.

We have been advised by his attorney and the ACLU that bonds vary anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000. We have exhausted all funds to pay for attorney’s fees, court costs, and expert witnesses. This has left us with little funds to continue. We are asking for help to continue to provide legal aid and fund the bond which we are praying will be set for him, so he can remain with his children and parents until his court date which will determine his final fate. No amount is too little and we appreciate anything and everything everyone has been doing. Thank you!
