Trevor's Kidney Transplant

Our son Trevor was born chronically ill with not just one, but BOTH kidneys failing. He had major surgery as a baby to help correct the issue, but his doctors warned that later his teenage growth spurts may tax his body to the point of needing a transplant. Unfortunately now at age 16 years old, Trevor’s kidneys are now at less than 10% of what they should be- his body is declining, he is often tired and sick.
Fortunately medical testing so far has shown Andreas to be a good donor candidate for Trevor and we are thrilled as we move forward with fingers crossed!!
But, as both Andreas and I have freelance careers, we are facing steep costs related to Trevor's transplant in the way of treatment, care, and regular life expenses as we miss work while we navigate recovery.
This fundraiser will help offset those expenses so we can focus on the path in front of us.
When Trevor was an infant we discovered he had a chronic condition called hydronephrosis- both kidneys were heavily damaged. Major surgery at 11 months old helped to rescue some of his kidney function and after his recovery at age 2 years old, we finally had a lull where he was "normal"- Meaning that, other than nephrology visits at Boston Childrens every 6 months and various medications, we didn't need to focus on his kidney disease.
Trevor's specialists warned us that the puberty years would be the real test. The body is taxed tremendously from growth spurts and either his kidneys would hold up, or they would decline -so before Trevor turned 16 we learned his body was struggling so much that he would in fact need a kidney transplant
We have begun learning about the process during regular meetings with our transplant team at Boston Children’s Hospital. As overwhelming as this has been, Trevor has been a champ, his brother has been an amazing support, and our family bond has tightened. We talk a lot and hug even more!
Trevor needs to receive a donation very soon!! Preliminary testing has shown that Andreas is a good match, and that he is healthy enough to give Trevor one of his kidneys! Several more rounds of testing are needed and I am ready to step up next if it comes to that!!
We have high hopes that Trevor will feel amazing soon with a new kidney, but aftercare will continue for quite some time. For several months after surgery Trevor and Andreas will have twice-weekly checkups, and once-weekly visits for several months after that.
Our plan is for one parent to be the donor, and the other parent to care for two. This will require time away from work and we look forward to moving toward our goal of being a healthy family together!
Financially we don't know exactly what is ahead of us. Andreas and I both have freelance careers with out-of-pocket insurance , no benefits or sick days.
This fundraiser will be used to cover expenses related to Trevor's kidney transplant including regular life expenses during recovery while we miss work.
