Save Beeliar Wetlands Law Fund

Donation protected
Save Beeliar Wetlands is taking our campaign to the High Court of Australia. We know that Roe 8/Perth Freight Link is bad policy and the wrong decision for Western Australia's future. Wetlands are fragile and delicate, and the Beeliar Wetlands can't recover from clearing 100ha - approx 1/4 of the total. There is no way that a freeway through a wetland can be anything other than an environmental disaster.

The community doesn't want this road and the cost is unacceptably high when there are better alternatives. The safety of our community, schools, parks and homes are all under imminent threat by the Perth Freight Link.

We need to raise funds now to continue to challenge the poor decision making about Roe 8 and the Perth Freight Link. We have the support of local councils and local members of parliament both at the State and Federal level. Thousands of supporters have joined us already and given their support, time and energy.

Working together we can be a powerful voice for the community. We know that the government has more legal muscle and access to funds - but we have the people power and support of our great community!

We need your help! We need to raise at least $50,000. Giving whatever you can will help us get there.

We are ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things, join us to help protect the environment, community amenity and the proper use of public money.

What is the Save Beeliar Wetlands Campaign?

The Save Beeliar Wetlands campaign is all about local community. We appreciate the ecological value and beauty of the Beeliar Wetlands, a series of swamps, wetlands and lakes across the southern corridor of Perth forming part of the Beeliar Regional Park. Local people have been involved in activity and community awareness to halt road building through this fragile environment for more than 30 years.

Our campaign has grown so much in the last 2 years that it is hard to describe and we now have supporters all over Perth and beyond. The campaign takes in all facets of the community from the committee who meet every fortnight, to the people who sit on stalls, organise fundraisers, write to the papers, take photos, play music, make soup, put up signs and contribute by making a noise and reminding the government that not only do we not want the road but we think that their planning processes are fundamentally flawed. We are passionate about our wetlands, we have been campaigning relentlessly, we are willing to put in huge effort to stop this Road to Nowhere.

 What We Need

We have an incredible team of lawyers and community members who have given their time for this legal challenge but we need to meet their generosity by contributing funds to pay for the ongoing and already incurred costs. We have already won a huge victory for our cause last December when the Chief Justice agreed with us that the EPA should have to follow its own guidelines and processes. The Government appealed this decision and this appeal has been upheld. The last place we can appeal is the High Court of Australia so we need more funds to cover both our costs and the estimated costs of taking such action. The team have estimated that this will come to more than $100,000. With your help our campaign can confidently continue to seek justice.

The Impact

It is not difficult to imagine how much protecting this last remaining wetland could give our community - we enjoy it now and will do everything we can to avoid having it destroyed by an unnecessary freeway development. If we can win this we can secure a future nature space for generations of wildlife and people. Losing this precious wetlands and adjacent bushland will impact upon us all.

The biggest impacts are:

*protecting Aboriginal and non Aboriginal culture and heritage

*protection of habitat for threatened species such as the Carnaby's Cockatoo, Graceful Sun Moth and Southern Bandicoot

*continuity of the wetlands to ensure biodiversity and species survival of both animal and plant species

*keeping Bibra Lake and North Lake as spaces for our kids and community to enjoy

*alerting the government to the need to listen to the people: they do not have a mandate to build this road

*clean air

*clean water

*keep our homes and bush safe

Risks & Challenges

There are risks involved in the Save Beeliar Wetlands Campaign, we are putting our community organisation on the line by going to court however we believe that this is a risk that we can and should take for the good of all.

Many people in the southern and western suburbs of Perth are relying on us to stop the Perth Freight Link at Roe 8. It is the best way of keeping the Government accountable and ask them to properly consider the development needs of the state, in particular the Kwinana Outer Harbour.
