West Regional Academy - Online School in Africa

Plant A Seed-Africa is seeking to raise $20,000 to launch its newest program, West Regional Academy.

West Regional Academy is an on-line learning program providing primary school education to children in the Western Region of Cameroon.  Because of political unrest in the area, most schools have been closed for several years under the threat of violence to any who attend. This article from Voice of America provides some information.  According to Human Rights Watch,  the United Nations reports over 30,000 children in the region have been out of school for more than two years.

To help children in the region obtain a basic elementary education, Plant A Seed Africa started West Regional Academy.  Students will study independently on their own computers or at a computer learning center operated by Plant A Seed (Plant A Seed also provides basic computer skills programs to students in the area and recently graduated its first Certificate in Computer Skills class). The curriculum will be provided via Apex Learning , an on-line school school based in Seattle.  Local teachers will monitor assignments and provide academic assistance and the program will be overseen by Catherine Lamfu, Headmistress of the Covenant Baptist Nursery & Primary School, and her husband Emmanuel Lamfu, Principal of the Kad-Ndap Bilingual Complex secondary school.

The cost charged by Apex for one year is $300 per student, however many families in the area earn less than $50 a month.  Therefore, Plant A Seed's goal is to offer financial assistance and full scholarships to 10 motivated, deserving students. The WRA will also be open to any students who are able to pay on their own. There is an initial $1,000 administrative fee required by Apex to initiate the Academy and the final $1,000 will be used to pay teachers and purchase supplies such as notebooks and pencils.   The goal is to expand the program to as many students as financially possible and to eventually include high school curriculum.

Partner with us to create opportunities for children in Cameroon by giving them access to education.  Time is running out for these kids. Without an education, they will be unable to secure employment as they become adults. Without the structure provided by studying,  they are more likely to be caught up in the civil unrest or become teenage parents.  Let’s act fast. With your help, we can start the process of changing the course of a nation. Together, we can break the chain of poverty through education in Cameroon.

We will be updating this site with our curriculum plan and information on the students as they are selected.
