Democratising Creativity and Culture

This GoFundMe is open so we can feature and pay more artists to showcase their work for the West Midlands Weekender to be held on 26 September 2020.

This Weekender’s theme is on “Democratising Creativity and Culture” , and is produced by three regional young producers Aksana Khan, Diandra McCalla, and Paige Jackson.

Opening up creativity and culture starts with making sure that young creatives get paid their dues. It’s especially because in July, the Office of National Statistics reported that “the estimated number of people unemployed aged 16 to 24 years increased by 47,000 on the year .” Some of us know personally how young people have lost a lot of income due to the pandemic, and with it, lost opportunities to platform their creativity and work.

The final Weekender is an opportunity to come together as a community to support the region’s current and future talent. We’d appreciate your help with this. We’re fundraising so we can showcase more artists.

What’s a West Midlands Weekender?

It’s a series of three festival weekends, organised by the West Midlands Cultural Response Unit (WMCRU). Led by Culture Central, WMCRU’s purpose is to ensure the visibility, viability and recovery of the Cultural Sector in the West Midlands.

What’s special about the final Weekender?

This particular Weekender aims to platform and celebrate some of the region’s young creatives exploring all things arts, culture and heritage. Not only will themes of democracy be explored (in its broadest sense) throughout the programme, but audiences and participants will get an opportunity to be a part of steering the festival content with Aksana, Diandra, and Paige!

Where does my money go?

All donations will be gratefully received because it will support young artists in the West Midlands (aged 16- 30) showcase their talent in this Festival. The amount raised will determine how many artists we can feature in the final Weekender. A donation of £100 will support an artist submitting their work for the festival. A donation of £300 will support an artist to create a new commissioned piece of work.

What else can I do to show support?

We’re deeply appreciative of any amount of time and money spent on this Festival. If you don’t have the means to donate, we’re still sending you good vibes, especially if you:

-Re-share social media posts via @CultureCentral;
-Tell people about the festival;
-Signpost young creatives to apply to be a part of the programme via https://forms.gle/1kZVPWmvUGw7ck7d8  (Deadline is 6 September).

This GoFundMe will close on 1st September.
