West Cumbria Mental Health, 5 Wainwright challenge

Rugby League 5 Wainwrights challenge in aid of West Cumbria Mental Health Yewdale Ward West Cumberland Hospital. Rugby rivalries are put aside as rugby clubs come together united in an event to raise awareness of Mental Health and raise much needed support and funds for the Yewdale Ward at West Cumberland Hospital. The funds raised will be helping to kick start a project on the court yard on yewdale ward, the current court yard is out dated and in desperate need of a make over and renovation. The plans are to transform the courtyard into a bright therapeutic area with a garden and benches to sit and enjoy the fresh air, and also a place to do exercise and fitness rather than the inpatients being stuck in doors. Organisers Ryan Dodgson of Frizington and Gary Hewer of Distington have reached out to the rugby community to seek their support with this venture. Throughout planning this whole event, Copeland Councillor and Mental Health Champion Wammo Walmsley have whole heartily supported and passionately encouraged , giving insight and knowledge of local needs. All (CARLA) Cumbria Amateur Rugby League Clubs are supporting the venture with up to x4 representatives from each club taking part (following all government guidelines). Both Professional Clubs Whitehaven RL and Workington Town RL are onside , with players participating in the trek along side the local Referees Society and local rugby union teams Whitehaven RU & St Benedicts RU. It’s amazing how the rugby family pulls together through hard times.  The (RFL) Rugby Football League and National Recognised Charity State of Mind (State of Mind is a charity that harness the power of sport to promote positive mental health among our sports men and women, fans and wider communities, and ultimately to prevent suicide) are also supporting the event with Danny Skullthorpe and former Workington Town Coach Phill Vievers hoping to walking the route.   We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world with the Lake District on our door steps , filled with some challenging walks. It’s only fitting we maximise this opportunity. The route has been masterminded by local Physical Training Instructor and outdoor enthusiast Zoe Winter. The sponsored walk will consist of 5 Wainwrights including: Dodd, Carlside, Longside, Ullock Pike & Skiddaw and will take place on Saturday 11th July. The work the staff do on the yewdale ward is tremendous, but due to government cuts and the inevitable rise in mental health due to the covid-19 outbreak there services are understandibly over stretched, the suicide rate in our area is twice that of the national stats so we would love nothing more than to raise heaps of money for this great ward and team of staff to help support and possibly save as many people as they possibly can. Please can everyone donate to the link above, all donations are very much appreciated.  Much love Ryan and Gary.
