Wendy's SEVEN Continent Marathon Quest

Hi! My name is Wendy Garrett. Following a motor accident in 2010 I was left with two spinal cord injuries, and the loss of the use of my left leg. Although it took having my life on hold for 3 years to finally get that diagnosis. Let me tell you, it was a tough uphill road.

I'd been active my whole life. Gymnast turned gymnastics coach, runner, fitness instructor, outdoor enthusiast, snowboarder. So to not be able to do the things I once loved was hard. Not knowing if I'd ever be able to do them again was scarey.

Fast forward to today. I'm one continent away from completing a marathon on all 7 continents! I just have Antarctica to go (and YES there is a marathon in Antarctica) Just need time to save up the entry fee of $18,000.

I never fully received the use of my left leg back, but I'm able to run again thanks to an Allard AFO Brace. I've also been able to return to coaching gymnastics, teaching fitness classes, hiking, and more. My disability makes me want to get out there and see what I can do next inspite of it. I agree with Scott Hamilton "The only disability in life is a bad attitude."

In 2018 I was the first runner with a spinal cord injury to complete the 6 World Marathon Majors on foot: Boston, NYC, Chicago, Berlin, London, and Tokyo. It was amazing to be able to complete that goal and I'm still grateful for every mile I'm able to run around the world.

I quickly set my next goal to completing the 7 continents. I love having a goal because goals give us hope. My running reminds me the hardest climbs often lead us to the best views, and that life is tough but we are tougher.
