Wells for Suong village in Cambodia

Suong Village is in Bakong District, Cambodia.  It’s located about 16 kilometres from Siem Reap (approximately 7 km north of Tonle Sap Lake) with a population of just over 940 (approximately 310 children).

Being a rural area the average daily income is less than $1∙⁵⁰ USD per day (around $2∙⁰⁰ AUD) enough for the basic necessities and many not even earning this and barely able to provide for themselves.  There’s no running water, no proper toilet facilities and little or no money to educate their children and break the poverty cycle which would enable them to eventually become self-sufficient.

The cost of one well is around $290 USD (includes drilling, installation of pump, filter and paving the cement/concrete around well). I’d like to raise enough funds to install up to ten wells ($2900 USD).

Suong village has a small school (many villages do not) for the younger children (most of the 14 to 15-year old’s have already started working) but sadly, only 1 in 5 of these children will ever complete high school. There’s always a chronic lack of school supplies such as books, stationery, pencils and crayons etc. and there’s no play equipment to speak of.  It’d be fantastic to provide the school with some desperately needed supplies along with some toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap etc.) for the children and their families

All up, I reckon around $4,500 to $5,000 AUD will help substantially (a small percentage of funds raised also goes to Go Fund Me). If more is raised, then more will be purchased for the village as 2017 has been especially tough with the return on rice crops being much lower than expected.

I am self-funding another trip to Cambodia in November this year to arrange the well installations by local tradesmen and to purchase school supplies from local traders as this boosts the local community.
