KIWOCE (Kilimahewa Women’s and Orphan’s Center for Education) began in 2007 as a group of mamas from a subsistence farming community, who came together under a tree to find a way for their children – unable to attend formal schools – to keep learning. Today, more than 10 years later, the Center is an official Tanzanian "Open School" with full Internet capability, offering disadvantaged young people a way to advance in society.
Young women, in particular, can find a path to independence in the wide range of courses and individual attention that KIWOCE offers. Lifeskills and health management courses are part of the KIWOCE experience, as are access to reading materials, motivational speakers and an exposure to entrepreneurial ideas and resources through guided Internet instruction.
To accommodate more young women, KIWOCE must complete a second floor hostel. Today, distance and security concerns prevent many girls, who would otherwise reap Kilimahewa's enormous benefits, from attending the Center.
A generous grant from the T&J Meyer Family Foundation and targeted donor support have allowed construction to begin on the Center. What remains are some finishing electrical, plumbing and painting tasks, an updated sewage system and the initial furnishings, primarily consisting of bunk beds.

ASANTE SANA - BIG THANKS to all of our campaign supporters. We have been able to open doors to female teens this January! We are now spreading the word in Northern Tanzania about the Center's lovely boarding facility so that more young women will come to take advantage of its academic and practical skills training: education that will lead to self-reliance. We will be closing this campaign but please keep in touch through our website: www. edpowerment.org.
