Victims of La Loche Shooting

Friday January 22, 2016 was a tragic day for my home community of La Loche, SK. There was a shooting in the community at the local community high school. Marie Janvier, Adam Wood, and brothers Dayne and Drayden Fontaine lost their lives in this senseless tragedy and seven others were critically injured. The four deceased victims are in the photo. La Loche is a remote and isolated community approximately 600 km north of Saskatoon. It is a community of strength and filled with hard working and kind hearted people. When tragedy hits, the people always come together. Any time someone passes away, the people of La Loche help to raise funds for funeral arrangements by holding community auctions. Families have to drive at least four hours away one way to make these arrangements.
If we were able to help lift this burden for the people of La Loche, they can concentrate and focus on dealing with this tragedy. La Loche is a small close knit community and everyone has been affected. I know how hard it is to think about finances during times of grief especially one of this magnitude. Let's help these families concentrate on healing and give them a little bit of peace.
The money will be divided equally among the 11 families affected, four of which will be making funeral arrangements and 7 are supporting loved ones in hospitals hundreds of kilometers away. Those injured and are in hospital have requested to have their privacy respected and will not be named here. Be assured this fund is in contact with those families and monies will be sent directly to them. If we exceed our goal, the rest of the money will go to the La Loche Community School to help their students and staff cope with this tragedy.
I am a school teacher originally from La Loche but currently living here in Burnaby. I feel helplessness because I live so far away and I thought I would reach out to my immediate network to provide another layer of support to my family and friends in La Loche. I know what it's like to lose someone suddenly. And when there are additional challenges such as the remoteness of the community and the lack of services and access to even the basics it will make a difference for them to have this financial support. Marie Janvier was among one of the first students I ever taught.
Donations will be accepted until Friday January 29th at midnight. I am working with the leadership team at the Northern Village of La Loche and other community members both in La Loche and across Canada to make this goal a reality. The Northern Village of La Loche has appointed the town administrator their designate responsible for disbursing funds equally amongst families affected. All funds from this campaign will be directed to the Northern Village of La Loche.
This campaign is in daily communication with the community of La Loche to ensure that funds are directly appropriately and timely to provide support for funeral expenses and hospital care for those injured.
