Hello from we.grow.eco! We (Chauncey and Noah) have made it to the Navajo Nation, where we will be facilitating a community clean-up on Saturday. We’ve come a long way since Virginia (over 3,000 miles!), but we still have a ways to go.

We’re reaching out first to say thank you for your donations, which have made this project possible. In our first round of fundraising, we raised $7,100 (through PayPal, GoFundMe, and cash donations). Thus far, we have spent $10,350 (monthly average: $1,480). Here are some statistics from our first seven months of walking:

Nearly 30,000 pieces of trash picked up and documented on the One Piece A Day app
- 8 community clean-ups
- 5 food walks, at which we handed out over 240 burritos
- 4 conference and career fair presentations
- 1 month-long “one piece a day” pilot program at Birches School in Lincoln, Massachusetts
- 1,300 cartwheels
- Countless conversations and connections with a locals along the way, as diverse a group as this country contains

We are now launching a second round of fundraising. When we reach San Francisco on January 8th, 2022 (come celebrate with us if you’re in that area!), the first we.grow.eco project will be complete, but we are already looking to the future. We aim to raise $11,000 in three phases:

1) the first $1,000 will support our partner organizations for the rest of the walk, such as Enchantment Skate Shop in Gallup, New Mexico.

2) the next $3,000 will help us finish up the walk, and will go toward food, gas, travel home, and medical check-ups.

3) the final $7,000 and beyond will help us establish we.grow.eco on stable, sustainable footing so that we will be able to provide ongoing community clean-ups, experiential education programs in schools, summer youth conservation experiences, and more.

We will be closing donations from this GoFundMe page. To donate, and to see a more detailed outline of what we’re envisioning, visit https://www.wegroweco.org/we-fundraise

Much love & many thanks,

Chauncey & Noah from we.grow.eco

A human — Chauncey — has decided to walk across the United States together. He set out on March 20th, 2021 from Virginia Beach, Virginia with his friend Ben, who walked with Chauncey til northern Mississippi, with the goal of reaching the San Francisco Bay shoreline by the end of the year. Chauncey is now accompanied by Noah, driving the support vehicle. We will be sleeping in tents, preparing our own meals, and living mostly outdoors during this period.

Along the way, we will be:

- picking up (at least) one piece of trash a day and putting it in its rightful place, while encouraging you all to do the same;

- facilitating community clean-ups and other events with interested local folks, organizations and independent groups;

- engaging in and documenting discussions with members of different communities about a variety of topics, including but not limited to civic engagement, community organizing, and grassroots power.

We believe this work is not only fulfilling personally, but can help to mend some of the conditions that allow for long-standing injustices in our country by empowering people everywhere to step into their individual and collective power. The purposes of these actions are manifold, but here are a few focal points:

Actionable Change: Our efforts are aimed at improving the material circumstances of people and other living and nonliving parts of the ecosphere in a lasting way. We accomplish this through community clean-ups, discussions, education, and leadership training.

Waste Reduction & Litter Prevention: Reducing the impact of solid waste through integrative programs that address a range of topics, including: responsible consumerism, source reduction, creative reuse ideas, recycling and education about landfills, proper household hazardous waste disposal, composting, and waste-to-energy practices.

Leadership Development: Facilitate 2-5 day environmental education, civic engagement and leadership workshops in communities with people of all ages.

Coalescence:
  Maintain and improve the collaboration between community members, organizations, businesses, and municipalities to provide integrated efforts and solutions that cultivate community development.

Philosophical Ethics: We will reexamine normalized societal, organizational and individual values so that we can better understand our actions and choices and how they affect those within and without our community, as well as the environment.

While we have independently saved some money, in order to make this trip live up to our vision, we are asking for donations. To get through the first part of the walk with another person supporting us on the road, we have calculated our initial fundraising goal to be $6,000.00.

Donations will support the following:

- Food
- Health Insurance
- Documentation — recording and audio equipment such as phones, microphones, and software for recording, editing, and sharing online
- Project support — i.e. gas, WiFi hotspot, help with resupplies, and field coordination (finding campsites, coordinating community events with project partners)

You have the option of making a one-time donation, or a monthly donation (these can be stopped at any time). Both are immensely helpful, but if you are able, smaller recurring donations would greatly promote the ongoing sustainability of we.grow.eco.

The ultimate aim following the walk is to establish a non-profit organization, and any funds we have once we reach California will be put toward that effort.

Thank you for helping make this walk a reality! Follow our journey on Instagram at @wegroweco and check out our website to learn more: www.wegroweco.org.
