Baking for Spinal Rehab Therapy

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Richard. 5 years ago, I went in for an operation to prevent paralysis due to compression of my spinal cord. Unfortunately, the operation went wrong and I woke up paralysed from the neck down. This was a massive blow and although part of the hospital rehabilitation allowed me to perform many simple tasks, I did not have full function and could not enjoy life like I did before - I could not even tie my own shoelaces. Due to this, it left me dependent on other people and knocked my confidence, leading to depression and anxiety.

Therapeutic values
In 2017, my dad suggested I should try baking to aid my rehab, as well as give me a new hobby. The difference this has made in my life is beyond anything I could have expected. My rehabilitation has accelerated and I have gained more function than I would have if I had not started baking. Baking has allowed me to feel “normal”, as there is nothing I cannot do - I can read the recipe, I can weigh out the ingredients, I can knead. And when I do all these movements I forget everything; I can just be Richard.

Why I want to raise money
Because of what baking has given me, I want to be able to share this experience with others who have suffered similarly to me. My plan is to work with the Queen Elizabeth’s hospital and set up a baking programme within the spinal unit, aiming to help improve the lives of others.

Thank you and I appreciate you taking the time to read my story. All donations are gratefully received!
