On Monday August 27th at approximately 6pm, Joe Kerr smelled smoke in his home in Fairfax, California. He rushed downstairs to find the stove on fire and a kitchen full of smoke. He ran outside with the phone to call the police. He then attempted to re-enter the home to gather Coltrane, his beloved dog, and his wallet and cell phone. The smoke was too thick and he was forced to escape out the back door with nothing but the clothing on his back.

Joe lost everything in this fire. Losing his dog is the most upsetting. Belongings are replaceable, but there was only one Coltrane. It’s hard to comprehend the panic and terror one must feel watching everything he owns, his memories, and even his adored pet meet an untimely demise. We are so thankful that Joe was able to escape without injury. Firefighters were able to contain the fire before it spread to other units and their service is greatly respected.

Anyone who knows Joe knows how kind and selfless he is. A well respected staple in the community, he has dedicated his life to teaching, coaching, and taking care of his family. Now it is time to help Joe rebuild his life as he knows it. With his immediate family living far away and having lost his life partner, Bonnie, to cancer some years ago, he will soon be back to living on his own.

Family, friends, and friends of friends, we are looking to you for help at this most crucial time. Our first priority is finding Joe a new place to live. Affordable housing in Marin County is non-existent to say the least. For someone who has not experienced the rental market in almost 30 years, the sky high prices are shocking. After just having retired this year at 72, he has limited income moving toward the future. We would like to raise enough money to help Joe with rent (most likely nearing $3,000/month), new clothes, furniture, and incidentals. A little goes a long way, and anything you can give will be accepted with much appreciation.

Joe currently does not have a place to store anything so if you wish to donate, we are asking for monetary donations at this time. If you prefer to send a check or gift card to Target, Costco, Home Depot or something of the like, you may send in the mail to:

If anyone in Marin has any housing leads or spare units, please contact Jenna at [email redacted].

Many thanks for your consideration. Please share this message far and wide. When people come together to lift up the less fortunate, amazing things can happen. The Kerr family appreciates your positive thoughts and prayers. #wesupportjoe
