These doors are made of aluminum and glass. They look like regular doors. But they are more than doors. Behind these doors are a team of dedicated staff and volunteers. Behind these doors is a new start for those that come through them. These doors have had nearly 16,000 lives come through them since 2009. More will walk through these doors this year and next and the years to come.
For the first 3 quarters of this year, expenses have exceed income which is typical for most non-profits as many donations come in during the last month of the year. So far this year, expenses have been $757,130 and income has been $665,510 so your donation is very much needed. That is a difference of $91,620 and we still have November and December to go. In 2016 expenses exceeded income by $57,005. 98% of our expenses are for direct animal care with less than 2% for management and fundraising.
Franklin County Humane Society is a non-profit. We do not receive government funding or assistance from the county. We only exist by the generosity of folks like you. People that believe in and care about the value of the homeless pets in our community.
As the director of Franklin County Humane Society’s adoption center, I could not be more proud of the work that our team does every day. As I review this year, I am thankful for Franklin County Humane Society. Did you know that it has not been that long ago that the adoption center at Franklin County Humane Society did not exist? During that dark time in our county, many homeless dogs and cats lost their lives. Fast forward to today, our adoption center has saved over 2,100 lives this year alone. We are saving the same amount of lives that were being lost as short as ten years ago. We are working hard at Franklin County Humane Society to meet the needs of the homeless animals in our county. Our low cost spay and neuter clinic, Planned Pethood Clinic has spayed nearly 57,000 pets and provides low costs wellness services.
Franklin County Humane Society has made incredible strides on our county and reaches out to other areas. We are taking in over 80% of the pets in need in our community. Many pets from surrounding localities come to us for help. We have been the driving force that has reduced the lives lost at our local open intake animal control shelter (pound). We have turned the tables in our community. Instead of 2,000 plus pets dying in our county each year, they are being saved! The spay/neuter, retention, and adoption programs at Franklin County Humane Society has reduced the number of lives lost at the local animal control shelter. But that is not good enough. We want it at 0% and we will get there. This year we developed our Farm Hand Program for scared, unsocial, feral cats. We actively search for suitable homes for these kitties whose lives would otherwise be lost.
Although we are listed as a limited admissions shelters, we are operate nearly as open intake. Rarely is anyone turned away and if they are, many options are given. No pet in need is turned away due to age or medical needs from Franklin County Humane Society. This year like years past has brought many neglected or injured pets to us requiring extensive care. Some pets have had to stay at a full service vet for weeks on end. We take in seniors and hospice cases. We are here for them when their lives are on the line. Franklin County Humane Society is there when their lives are in danger simply due to space, age, or illness. Normally on average fives pets a day come to us, seven days a week. We continue to provide a valuable service for our community.
This year has also come with a lot of high cost repairs for our building. Our den doors need to be replaced, outside day kennels, appliances, counter tops, plumbing issues…and the list continues to grow.
We continue to have had an exorbitant rise in costs this year. Our major expenses are medical supplies, payroll for veterinary and animal care staff, as well as outside veterinary services. We have set the goal of this fundraiser at $85,000. We know that sounds high, but that is one month of operating expenses for Franklin County Humane Society Planned Pethood Clinic and Adoption Center.
As we enter the holiday season, we hope that you will remember Franklin County Humane Society. Please help us with our goal of raising one month of operating expense. We thank you and so do the ones that will come through these doors.
