We love you Melanie

This page is in support of our beloved girl, Melanie Malcolm. As you may know, Melanie was in the Vanderhoof hospital from Saturday, July 15th-24th struggling with depression and the dark thoughts that can accompany depression.

This first came out back in December just before Melanie's dear friend Abby died and things worsened when 2 weeks later Melanie's grandpa died. She'd been having depression for many months before but we didn't realize it.

Melanie's family took her to the doctor because she was very depressed. They started to understand the complexity of the issue and the pressures Melanie was taking upon herself as she sought to help everyone else and didn't want to burden others with her own pain.

Kevin and Rachel realized that their own inability to deal with stress in a healthy way was contributing to the pain Melanie was experiencing. They sought out some group counselling, and Melanie very gradually improved over the following months.

Things got worse again as the school trips to California and another to Montreal and Ottawa approached. Melanie just wasn't well enough to go on them and fear about it started triggering panic attacks.

Melanie was deeply saddened by missing the trips that she'd been working towards and looking forward to for many months. It was an amazing experience for Myra, who did attend them.

It was believed that they would be able to get some of the money back from the trip because they had paid medical insurance and a doctor confirmed she was unable to go. But it looks like it'll be declined and Melanie lost thousands of dollars that she'd worked very hard for at her part-time Job at Tim Horton's.

The depression returned full force. Melanie was connected with a local counsellor. She met with the counsellor 3 times over four weeks, but the first two times were paperwork and Melanie was feeling very discouraged that things weren't improving. She was losing hope that anything would help.

Melanie's symptoms worsened even further and hospitalization was required.

Much of Melanie's family lives on the island. It's challenging to be so far away in such dire circumstances and we wanted to come up with something that we could contribute to Melanie's healing process. It started with thinking we could ask our family to each make a small contribution towards re-establing some of the money that Melanie has lost by not being able to attend her school trips and that could be used towards going on another trip when she is ready. We then came up with the idea to ask all her loved ones to possibly make a very small contribution to this through a Go Fund Me Page.

Melanie is going through alot and on one aspect, monetary contributions may seem trivial but I also think it would show her just how much we all love her and support her.

I am here to ask for a very small contribution from each of you to reach our goal and help show Melanie that we are all here for her.

Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, I am limited to how I can reach out to Melanie's closest friends and family that I don't know. Facebook messages tend to go to a mysterious place if a message is recieved from a "non friend." I've done my best to send to those friends and family but perhaps any of you that do recieve this in the North could extend it to any individuals that you know are close to Melanie.

Thank you so much for your love and support.
