We Kept America Great Documentary Series

To say we live in an era of misinformation is an understatement at best. As we struggle to find the truths in the news, media, and even in what we hear from elected officials, we find ourselves grappling with the history that’s presented in most of our textbooks. We find ourselves at odds with the narrative we see time and time again, and we find ourselves yearning to set the record straight and shout our stories from the rooftops. That’s why we’re creating the documentary series, We Kept America Great. And we need your help to make it happen.

How it Started

In September 2018, the Congressional Black Caucus hosted the 48th Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. During that critical moment in American politics as midterm elections approached, the Caucus gathered a number of notable guests under the theme of "The Dream Still Demands: Courage, Resillience, Leadership, & Legislation." The JMSP team knew that we had to attend.

At the conference, we had the privilege of speaking to noteworthy policymakers, academics, and media figures, including Micheline Bowman, Representative Val Demings and Mayor Jerry Demings, Caroll “CR” Gibbs, and Vibert L. White, Jr. PhD.

As we spent the week interacting with the “who’s who” of Black American politics, learning their stories and piecing together their visions for the future, we realized that we were driven to a greater purpose. We needed to amplify the voices of the individuals and communities that have contributed so much to this nation’s status and growth. We needed to reexamine our history so that we can gather the tools to create a culture of respect and togetherness.

Drawing from the joy and enlightenment we gained through our interviews with so many incredible people, we want to spread these stories from sea to shining sea. This story is not limited to African American history; people from every minority group, including Native Americans, Latinx Americans, Asian Americans, and immigrants have contributed innumerable incredible things to this country. We all deserve to be seen and heard, and we deserve the acknowledgement that We Made America Great.

Why it Matters

Today more than ever, it’s important to acknowledge that we may not have all the facts about American history. It’s important for us to dive into our heritage to understand how the U.S. came to be a global economic powerhouse and “the Promised Land” for refugees and those seeking new opportunities.

Every single one of us has made America great, whether it’s through our leadership, our learning, or our expression of our passions. In today’s political climate of misinformation and discord, we are speaking our truths and encouraging you to speak yours. That’s why we need your help.

What it Is

We intend to create a series of 5 documentaries chronicling the contributions of African Americans, Native Americans, Latinx Americans, Asian Americans, and immigrants, respectively. Along our journey, we will be researching our histories and speaking with academic and public leaders who can provide us with a deeper understanding of how modern America came to be with the help of minority groups.

Most importantly, this is our chance to speak to YOU, to understand how you contribute to keeping America great each and every day. We want to spread the message and let the stories of the incredible people throughout this series ignite a passion for connection and togetherness. We want to build a movement with these documentary films to bridge gaps and highlight our common grounds--not our differences.

How You Can Help

We’re launching this crowdfunding campaign so that we can make our vision to tell these stories through our documentary series a reality. We want to speak with members of the Black, Asian American, Latinx American, Native American, and immigrant communities that give this country strength; to document their stories through film, and to present our message through popular channels to help amplify our message.

Your support not only helps us fulfill a project we’re passionate about; it also allows us to tell the important stories and the untold stories of minority groups around this country. We aim to bridge the gap caused by underrepresentation and lack of mutual understanding. You can be part of this conversation and the culture of change.

Your donations will go to fund every step of this documentary journey, from production to travel and equipment. This particular fundraiser is for the first episode of our series, focusing on the African American story.

Why Your Help Matters

Our small team has a big dream, and any assistance you can offer would be appreciated beyond measure. To say thank you, contributors will be listed on our website with special thanks. We will also be offering a limited edition poster for those who donate $50. We are thrilled by the opportunity to connect with you and the people around this great nation just like you.
