The We Heart Coco Fund

Donación protegida
In August of 2014, I adopted 3-month-old Coco from Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter in Orleans, VT.

Over the past three years, he has proven to be one of the most affectionate, gentle, and loving cats I have had the privilege to know.

On July 1, Coco jumped on my bed and I noticed that he was breathing with his mouth open. I called the emergency vet and they told me to bring him in.

Coco was triaged and was put in an oxygen tank. A chest x-ray showed that his chest was filled with fluid (pleural effusion) and was pressing against his lungs, making it hard for him to breathe. They then sedated him and did a chest tap, removing the fluid from his lungs so he could breathe easier. I was able to take him home.

As you can see from Coco's records from his visit, dthe cause of this is most likely to be heart disease. As an indoor cat, Coco doesn't have the opportunity to go out and get himself in trouble.

The vet has suggested getting an ultrasound of Coco's heart to confirm what is going on so that he can begin treatment.

If it's heart disease, the prognosis is not good. Even with medication, Coco may not live more than a year, or less.

This has been truly heart-breaking for me. I never expected to have to make these decisions for Coco so early in his life. I have had to weigh my financial situation against what is best for him. My parents and extended family have been incredibly generous so far and have helped me as much as they can. I have made an effort to sell things from my house and am looking into getting a part-time job to help with expenses.

I am hoping to bring Coco in for an ultrasound so that a diagnosis can be officially made. This, along with a consultation with the vet and possible bloodwork, can cost anywhere from $450-$600. His vet bill from July 1 was $450. This is why I have set my goal as high as I have- to try and recoup some of the initial vet costs, and to cover this next visit and potentially his first round of meds and re-checks.

If you have a little extra this month, consider donating to Coco. You have no idea how even an extra six months with him would mean to me and his Hammy (grandma) and Grandpa. But please do not feel obligated- your kind words and messages of support go a long way, too.

Please contact me if you would like any additional information about Coco's situation. We thank you, profusely, from the bottoms of our hearts.

Love, Coco and Jennifer
