We have lost a loved one.

On January 3rd, 2022, a bright light went out in our little town of Sooke.

Some may not know Grant Gilbertson but his sweet and heartbroken family, his dear friends, the close-knit Hockey Community, and the future he would have had have lost a kind and gentle spirit, a fantastic and driven hockey player, a beloved and loyal young man with a twinkling impish smile. Grant had a genuinely soft soul (going so far as to rescue and rehabilitate an injured squirrel despite his mom’s attempts to dissuade him). Those who knew him will feel his loss acutely; those who did not should count themselves unfortunate for not having met “Mooey”.

Grant graduated from Edward Milne Community School in 2020 with many of his childhood friends. He was an excellent student who was involved with school activities and the Sooke community.

He had played hockey for Sooke Minor Hockey, Juan de Fuca Hockey, and was currently playing with the Peninsula Panthers…his love of hockey and being on the ice was boundless. The hockey future Grant had hoped for was cut short by a motor vehicle accident due to terribly icy road conditions on the way to practice.

Grant was a cherished and sweet son to his dedicated mom, the frequent sidekick of his older brother, Garett, a precious and close grandson, a wonderful nephew and cousin, devoted teammate, deeply treasured friend, and the pal of his dog, Luna, and his cat, Baxter, who loved him so very dearly.

His family cannot go back to how life was as Grant got ready for practice on the evening of January 3, 2022, and the financial costs that come with bereavement, especially that of a child, are daunting.

Grant’s mother, Darcie, would be the last person to request financial help in a situation like this, but has always been the first person to initiate fundraising when those in our community have faced challenges and tragedies. Although we cannot fix what has happened and feel somewhat futile in our gestures and messages, we can help in this small, but needed, way to lessen the difficulties they will be facing with this tragedy.

Let’s all come together and support this family allowing the entire family time to grieve and heal and shine a little light and warmth back in Grant’s place. ❤
