We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund

Now, more than ever, families of children in emergent care need our help. The We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund gives real help - in the form of gift cards, hospital vouchers and bill pay assistance - to families of pediatric patients immediately!

The We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund was created in 2016 to provide financial assistance to eligible families whose children are treated at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore to help meet financial needs associated with the costs of critical, and often life-saving medical treatments they desperately need. Created by Grace Callwood, a pediatric cancer survivor, and supported by her youth-led organization, the We Cancerve Movement, the fund was started with a $5,000 investment from prize money Grace won when she was 10 years old. The We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund assists children 18 years old or younger who are currently in ongoing medical treatment at Sinai Hospital for a serious health condition. Sometimes, these families are too preoccupied with medical care they don’t have the capacity to think about the financial obligations. Other families struggle to meet the financial burdens associated with their children’s care.

Since 2016, We Cancerve has raised more than $25,000 for families with children being treated at Sinai. Our fund is administered by Sinai’s Development Office. They work directly with medical staff and social workers to best determine families that could benefit most from the fund.

To date, our fund has covered more than 500 parking passes, more than 950 food vouchers at the hospital cafeteria and at least 245 Lyft rides so parents could get their children to chemo and other appointments. Families’ needs have changed since COVID-19; not only have some families been met with job loss and changes in employment, they've experienced changes in how they’re able to travel to and from the hospital and provide for the basic necessities like food and shelter.

In addition to helping families meet routine needs of caring for a sick child such as:

•prescription drug co-pays
•over-the-counter medicines
•transportation to/from treatment
•insurance co-pays
•out of pocket costs
•medical supplies

Our fund also provides rental assistance, utilities assistance, grocery and gasoline gift cards, and recreational services for young children and teens to help them overcome the burdens of loneliness that illness often brings. Facing a catastrophic illness like cancer can be devastating to families and obviously hard on pediatric patients. Help us help them. Donate today!
