The We Cancerve Pediatric Assistance Fund was created in 2016 to provide financial assistance to eligible families whose children are treated at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore to help meet financial needs associated with the costs of critical, and often life-saving medical treatments they desperately need. Created by the youth-led organization, the We Cancerve Movement, and started with a $5,000 investment from prize money won by Founder Grace Callwood, a 2019 CNN Young Wonder, when she was 10 years old, the We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund assists children 18 years old or younger who live with chronic illnesses, or who are currently in ongoing medical treatment at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore for a serious health condition and whose families struggle to meet the financial burdens associated with their child’s care. Thanks to overwhelming support from our 2018 “Goals for Grace” fundraiser, our We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund at Sinai reached $11,555.
As of July 2019, our fund covered 350 parking passes, 580 food vouchers at the hospital cafeteria and at least 110 Uber rides so parents could get their children to chemo and other appointments. This money is needed right now! This is not an investment fund; it's a right now fund for people who need it. We want to raise $20,000 by February 7, 2020: that's Grace's one year anniversary of being declared CURED. She finished chemo in 2014 and has been off chemotherapy for five years without a relapse. Her oncologists believe it is highly unlikely she will get cancer again.
Our fund is administered by Sinai’s Development Office. They work directly with medical staff and social workers to best determine families that could benefit most from the fund. Generous donations to our fund helps families with medical expenses that may include:
•prescription drug co-pays
•over-the-counter medicines
•transportation to/from treatment
•insurance co-pays
•out of pocket costs
•medical supplies
•and other out of pocket costs associated with their child’s diagnosis
Also, this fund helps moms and dads pay for parking during hospital and other medical appointments; food when siblings or when mom and dad have to be at the hospital with the sick child; gas for the vehicles or funds to pay for ride share services like taxis to the hospital; restaurant gift cards to ease the burden on families when they returned home and need to feed their families; and other gift cards to cover costs associated with other needs not covered by insurance like lip balm and soothing body balms for needed home massages from grandma, and new pajamas for another long week in bed, or a surprise toy, video game or book just because a kid should feel like a kid even though they’re sick!
