We Can’t Fail Peyton
We are raising money for our adopted daughter, Peyton, to get her the specialized treatment she needs to overcome the trauma and neglect she experienced as an infant before she was adopted. Just like a child with a physical illness like cancer getting life saving chemo treatments, this treatment for Peyton is just as crucial and life saving. Along the way we are also hoping to bring awareness and educate people about the growing crisis in foster/adopted children who have experienced developmental trauma. Your contribution will help Peyton get this treatment because it is NOT covered by ANY health insurance at this time. You can either donate here on her Go Fund Me page or directly to The Institute for Attachment and Child Development. Any remaining money after Peyton completes her treatment will be used for other children seeking treatment at The Institute for Attachment and Child Development. This is our adopted daughter Peyton and she needs you. She is a very bright 11 year old with so much potential. She is kind and caring, loves everyone, happy and outgoing and makes friends where ever she goes. She loves animals, being outside, and is an avid reader. Peyton looks like your normal kid, but below the surface she is fighting a hard battle and right now it is winning.
Peyton’s life has been a struggle before it even started. Her biological mom did drugs while pregnant causing Peyton to be born premature and addicted to drugs. After spending a month in the hospital to detox, she was released into the care of her biological mom. She spent 11 months being neglected and learning when she cried her needs were not met. When a child misses the opportunity to properly bond with their caregiver during those crucial infant months their brains do not properly develop. This left Peyton’s brain in constant survival mode of fight or flight.
Shortly before Peyton turned one, Texas Child Protective Services(CPS) finally stepped up after months of failing her and removed her from her biological mom’s care. The unseen damage was already done though.
At 15 months old we took Peyton into our home just before she was to go into foster care. On the outside she was just a super cute normal kid. Just before turning 4 her struggles started to become more than just the terrible two’s and three’s. Not being informed or prepared by her pediatrician or Texas Child Protective Services(CPS) about the potential impact of the neglect on her brain we thought a new daycare would be a better fit. It didn’t last long though. She started kindergarten soon after and although she was very smart her struggles continued to impact her daily at school.
In the spring of 2014 we learned that her early neglect in life was negatively impacting her day to day life. Unlike other children her age that had not been neglected, Peyton’s brain is stuck in survival mode which compromises her reasoning, coping skills, and ability to trust adults. We decided to sell our house and move to provide her with a better equipped school district that could better meet her needs. Peyton continued to struggle but we had a good support team for her and just tried to keep moving forward.
In January 2018 she had to be hospitalized after running away from home. Since then she has had many hospitalizations, outpatient programs, medications, multiple therapy modules, and insurance denying proper treatment and we knew she needed more specialized care. That is when her treatment team recommended The Institute for Attachment and Childhood Development in Colorado. We immediately completed the application and had her records sent to them for review. The Director contacted us promptly with grave concern for the immediate need to get Peyton treatment at this crucial time in her life to decrease the lifelong impact for her.
The Institute for Attachment and Childhood Development provides a safe and secure home while she receives the long term therapy that she specifically needs. It is expected to take up to a year to retrain her brain and heal the trauma that causes her to be stuck in survival mode. Insurance does not cover such a specialized program and Peyton is needing your help to raise the money.
Peyton is at a crossroads. The current path she is on is leading to her destruction but with your help we can lead her on the path to a full and successful life. Any amount helps even if you can only give $10. WE CAN’T FAIL PEYTON.
