With a 5 day short Notice, the District Of Columbia Goverment notified us that funding for Our 50 Low Barrier Shelter Beds & 24 Hour Drop In Space Would not be Renewed! In the following letter:
Dear Ms. Corado:
We appreciate the work that Casa Ruby has done to serve homeless youth in the District of Columbia.
Under Article VI. A. of Grant Agreement #DHS-FSA-HYRA-006-18 LGBTQ Homeless Youth Low-Barrier Beds (Grant Agreement), DHS at its discretion, and subject to the availability of funding may extend the Grant Agreement for additional terms. At this time, DHS has decided not to extend the Grant Agreement for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022.
After 9 years of serving THOUSANDS of Homeless Lgbtq Youth & Adults, 24/7, We are forced to close the doors to our most important program @Casa Ruby.(Our Low Barrier Housing.) On October 1st, 2021.Yes During COVID and Nearing Hypothermia Season.
We are raising money to be able to keep open our Remaining Beds that We operate across 7 DC Locations. This is not only a great loss to the DMV Area but now We have lost a National Resource that welcomes hundreds of vulnerable clients who seeks refuge from violence every year.
This is also a terrible loss of 30 Jobs that will impact the lives of Trans & Gender Non Binary & other employees who now may face homelessness themselves. A HORRIBLE TRAGEDY.
We were set to move back to 7530 Georgia Avenue after more than $100k in renovations and a new lease that our landlord worked out with us to be able to continue proving shelter beds to homeless clients. Yes our landlord had a change of heart!
We are calling on our supporters and allies to not only support this fundraiser but to help us sharing this fundraiser with their networks and possibly help us strategize ways to continue this life saving work with out DC Government Funding. Please write to us at [email redactado]
