Alex’s Medical Fund

My name is Sophie Bajkowsky but this story is truly not about me, but about my sweet, sassy, smart, strong 8 year old niece, Alexandra Barrett.

Friday, October 7th, was a day that rocked our entire family, especially Alex’s siblings and parents. Alex woke up with a massive headache that lead to the emergency room in Williamsburg but quickly turned into being airlifted to VCU medical center in Richmond. She experienced hemorrhaging in the brain (stroke) caused by having an AVM - Arteriovenous Malformation. Alex’s difficult journey just began that afternoon through November 10th! Alex was a true warrior through all of her tribulations: from intubation, sedation, digestion issues, and overall medical situations that many couldn’t endure, BUT she did come out strong! Most adults couldn’t have handled what our sweet Alex encountered. Furthermore, this endeavor wasn’t complete, Alex required one more surgery; surgeons needed to go back in to remove/repair the AVM on November 18th, which was another success and blessing for her and the family.

She returned home on November 22nd to her home, siblings and parents! She has progressed wonderfully well, she is happy, playing with her sister Avery and little brother Klay, back in school with her friends and great teachers! Our family is beyond grateful and elated for Alex’s recovery and to all the nurses, surgeons and doctors that saved Alex’s life.

After 39 total days in the hospital, brain procedures, and a craniotomy, one can’t imagine the colossal bill that my sister and brother in law have to pay off to everyone involved in Alex’s care.
