My insurance company decided that my current 10-year-old electric wheelchair has seen better days. (This probably has something to do with the fact that it is held together with twist ties and zip ties!) So I picked out a shiny new electric wheelchair at my local durable medical equipment provider. Insurance is covering most of the cost, but for what ever reason, they do not consider the added seat elevator or my tray as medically necessary and will not cover it.
I consider these items pretty necessary though, and need to pay for them out-of-pocket before the company can even order the wheelchair. The seat elevator will help me reach elevator buttons and automatic door openers, as well as put me at a more adult conversational height in social settings. And having used a tray on my wheelchairs for the last 20 years, I'm not even sure how I'd possibly function without one! My tray helps prop up my arms, enabling me to type, drive my wheelchair, and carry important items around within my reach.
So, if you can help me out, any little bit will help. Please feel free to distribute my fundraising page link to family, friends, or rich philanthropists as well. Thanks!
Update: Ok, folks, in the spirit of full disclosure, at my backrest fitting appointment today (4/26), I brought my backup, backup credit card (never used before because of the super crappy interest rate) and charged the modifications difference. Since I'm almost halfway to my goal and because I'll probably be in this chair for the next decade, I didn't want them to order it without the additions. So now it's crunch time. I need to get enough funds to finish paying off this charge ASAP. Any little bit will help!
