<div>Deze actie is voor oud-leerlingen van Howgate secondary school in Zimbabwe. Ze zijn tussen de 17-21 jaar en hebben dit deel van hun schoolcarrière goed afgerond. Sommigen gaan op zoek gaan naar een baan. Gewoon omdat dat broodnodig is, letterlijk. Anderen gaan verder voor hun A-level. Dat is noodzakelijk als je naar een hogeschool of universiteit wil. Het betekent: investeren in de toekomst.

<div>Op Howgate sprak ik met leerlingen over hun plannen, tijdens en na de lessen. Met een aantal gaat het goed, ook financieel: zij hebben voldoende mogelijkheden. Voor de meeste leerlingen en hun familie is het worstelen.

<div>Naast hoger schoolgeld moet er geld zijn voor een nieuw schooluniform. Dat betekent als snel dat in het eerste kwartaal van het nieuwe jaar zo'n $400,- nodig is.

<div>Learnmore is 20 jaar en wil verpleegkundige worden. Leren en werken. Solliciteren kan zodra de examenuitslag er is. Hij zal dan uit huis gaan. In de tussentijd helpt hij op het bedrijfje van zijn ouders. Hij heeft zijn ouders nog.

<div>Nigel is een ander verhaal. Hij is 17 en woont in de omgeving van Howgate. Zonder ouders, die zijn overleden. Een zus woont in Harare. Hij zorgt voor 2 neefjes. Als ik vraag hoe het gaat is het 'Good sir, how are you?'. En als ik vraag wat hij aan het doen is, is het 'Looking for food'.
