ABOUT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL READ-A-THON
For more than a decade, Watkinson School's annual middle school read-a-thon is a rite of passage service-learning project which aims to raise necessary funds to allow girls in Kenya to attend secondary school sponsored by the nonprofit organization BEADS for Education. As such, our middle school students and faculty have a special relationship with the students of Tembea High School in Kenya. In fact, through our fundraising, the Watkinson community has helped more than 20 girls go to school who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to get a high school education.
ABOUT OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TEMBEA SCHOOL IN KENYA
Our friendship with the Tembea School extends beyond fundraising. Through a common love of reading, the girls at Tembea and Watkinson middle schoolers connected this fall for virtual book club meetings during which students and teachers shared an appreciation for their common reading, A Wrinkle in Time; special stories about their cultures, families, and education; and songs they performed for each other. Over the years, Watkinson and Tembea students have also corresponded as pen pals. We are grateful for our special relationship with our friends at Tembea and that we can help with their tuition needs. Please consider joining us in our support of the girls at Tembea High School by sponsoring our Watkinson middle schoolers as we engage in our read-a-thon in service and gratitude to our special friends in Kenya. Thank you for any help you can give...no gift is too small.
