Get the Watford Miniature Railway back on track!

We need your help to get the Watford Miniature Railway back on track...

In a truly unprecedented year, the Watford Miniature Railway has been forced to close not once, but twice. The COVID-19 outbreak forced the railway to close between March and July, costing the railway over 50% of it's usual annual income. It was totally devastating that come early October, despite having only reopened for a short 10 week period, the railway would have to close again as a result of catastrophic flooding; the worst seen on the Watford Miniature Railway in its 61 year history.

Now we need your help...

The damage to the railway infrastructure is substantial. The track, coaches and locomotives (both diesel and steam) require repair before the railway can carry passengers again. We don't know when this may be, but your donations will make sure these repairs can be afforded and undertaken as soon as is practically possible. Here is an outline of how the railway will be able to use your donations:

Phase One: 'Bearing' With Us - The railway's fleet of over 20 coaches all require total bearing replacement, a vital component in keeping the wheels turning (literally). With over 100 of these bearings to replace at a cost of over £15 each, we hope to raise the £1600+ so you have a safe carriage to sit in on your next visit. - Our two diesels, 'Conway Castle' and 'Nikki Louise' also require new bearings as well as new drive chains at a cost of over £300 for the pair of them. On top of this, both locomotives will have to go off site to workshops for this work to be undertaken, which of course costs even more money in transport.

Phase Two: Getting Back on 'Track' - Our trackwork has suffered damage, as the floodwater moved the levels of the earth in places, causing some areas of the track to become uneven. This must be attended to before we are able to run trains again, which will cost us over £400 in materials.

Phase Three: Full Steam Ahead - Our main steam locomotive 'Marri' suffered badly in the flooding, and now requires a chassis strip down, check and rebuild, which could cost over £5000. Our other steam locomotive ‘Pilgrim’, plus two visiting steam locomotives, also suffered in the flooding. Anything you can give will ensure the safe return to service of these beloved locomotives.

It is important to note that included in all of the work required, will be a significant number of man hours, most of which will be charged for, as is the nature of specialist repair work.

With your help, we can have the WMR back operational for the Christmas Period (COVID permitting). We hope you will be able to join us in spreading festive cheer with a train ride round our beloved railway. Thank you all for your time in this very difficult period for the Watford Miniature Railway. We hope you will be able to give generously.
