On Friday July 26th in the middle of dinner service, staff at Water Street Kitchen noticed smoke and a hot wall in the kitchen of this destination restaurant located in Woods Hole on Cape Cod.

The building was saved thanks to the speed and heroism of the Falmouth Fire Department, but it has suffered significant damage to walls, ceilings, electrical systems and key equipment.  In addition, smoke engulfed the restaurant leaving lasting damage which will be challenging to repair.  As of Saturday morning, the Falmouth Building Inspector has closed the building pending the successful completion of key repairs.

The wonderful seaside restaurant holds a special place in our hearts for it's warm decor, amazing water views and killer menu.  Owned by John and Molly Wilson along with partner Chelsea Doohan, Water Street Kitchen is known for unique, inventive and delicious farm-to-table cuisine.

Please join me in supporting their efforts to rebuild and re-open Water Street Kitchen quickly.  We want to see the whole team back to work making their famous mussel soup, the hand baked bread with radish butter, the perfectly spiced cioppino and of course Chelsea's off the hook craft cocktails.

Our summer season is short here on Cape, and losing even a week will be challenging economically as Water Street Kitchen heads into the long quiet winter.

The money will be spent on contractors to repair electric systems, rebuild walls and drywall, clean smoke damage and replace restaurant equipment as needed.   The sooner funds are raised, the faster John Molly and Chelsea can make key decisions about these repairs, so your contribution today is greatly appreciated.

Dear Friends, John and I would like to thank you for all the support you have sent our way these past few weeks. We have been able to reopen our doors and we couldn't be happier to be able to get back to work! We are all so swept away by the amazing support we have been shown, and it has made an enormous impact on our ability to compensate our staff and to be able to move swiftly in completing necessary repairs. We feel incredibly lucky to belong to such a kind and caring community, and we look forward to seeing many of your faces come through our doors in coming weeks and months! We are overjoyed just to be able to keep doing what we set out to do when we opened WSK, when we wrote in our business plan "In business as in life, we want to embrace our community, and food, in its universal and communal nature, is our vehicle for doing so." We are so grateful that three and a half years later you have embraced us back.

Update #4 : Water Street Kitchen has made their repairs and as of this afternoon, they have passed building inspection and are poised to re-open before this weekend. Word has come that they are opening for oysters and cocktails tonight! We are now closing down this Go Fund Me effort, and send a special thank you to all who leaned in. See you soon in Woods Hole! We are lucky to live in such a tight knit community, with a wellspring of generosity all around us. I am grateful for your help. sincerely -- Beth

Update #3:

The response to the Water Street Kitchen fire continues to be overwhelming with the phone buzzing at the restaurant with passionate fans and supporters who want to help.

As of today we are turning this fundraising effort back on. Let me explain why.

When Molly and I met on Tuesday to discuss the campaign, she said she was "perhaps foolishly optimistic" that they would be back open as soon as this weekend. In the interim two days, it has become clear that the insurance companies do not share a sense of urgency towards a speedy reopening, which of course is the most important thing for the owners and staff of Water Street Kitchen. Every day closed is a little scarier than the last, and Molly and John are grateful that so many of you share their concern for the 25-member staff, who will be out of work for two weeks.

Repairs have been prevented from commencing due to insurance red tape, and at this point, WSK is faced with the terrifying prospect that even opening by next weekend may be out of the question. The only way to move forward more quickly could be covering all costs out of pocket, according to Molly and John, who are considering trying to do just that.

Safe to say, the resolution between the various insurance interests at play in this complex claim may take months to resolve.

Because of this news, we are re-opening the Go Fund Me primarily to continue to support the staff at Water Street. Please consider giving, no donation is too small.

Thank you for considering. Falmouth is a truly great place to live, and all of us in Woods Hole appreciate your support.

Update #2:

We are overwhelmed by the immediate and generous support for Water Street Kitchen! As of right now, donations are $31,740 with 225 donors in less than three days time. We are closing donations with great gratitude in our hearts for all your support.

Good News -- Molly and John tell me that they do not expect this closure to last more than two weeks, and to quote Molly, "it is perhaps with foolish optimism that it could even be sooner."

If you did not get a chance to donate, you can help them by coming in for a meal in the upcoming weeks and months. Really want to lean in? Consider coming on a weekday in November:).

In the meantime, these donations are so critical to this restaurant. How will they use the funds? First in their minds is supporting current staff who are now out of work. The bulk of the funds will be spent on staff compensation, because who can go for two weeks without summer pay when the rent is due? Top of mind for Molly, John and Chelsea was making sure that no one has to go without pay for that long. In order to expedite getting everyone back to work, the remainder will cover contractors, engineering, building permits and more to make sure this interruption is as brief as possible.

Without this infusion of capital, there is no way Water Street Kitchen would be on track to re-open quickly, so thank you to all who made it possible.

We look forward to seeing you in our favorite waterfront village of Woods Hole, and thank you again for supporting independent, family-run business in our community.

We could not do it without you.

Sincerely, Beth Colt
