Water Providing to Refugees in Northern Serbia

Donation protected

Hi everyone,
My name is Isabel Milheiriço and I started this month to work with the NGO Collective aid, which supports displaced people in Serbia. According to the UNHCR report of July, there are currently around 4000 refugees and migrants in the country. Most of these people are accommodated in governmental centers and specialized institutions, but around one-quarter of them are staying outside, either in abandoned houses, in tents in the “jungles” in the middle of nowhere, completely alienated from the Serbian society and in miserable conditions.
The project I am part of is based in Subotica, a city close to the border with Hungary. It aims at supporting these populations, that do not have access to the basic services provided by the government camps or by the specialized institutions. By working very closely with these populations and assessing their basic needs regularly, we realized that access to potable water was, in most situations, extremely difficult, if not impossible. As an example, the community living in both Horgos squats has repeatedly told members of the team that they were drinking water from the lake nearby. This raises grave concerns about the long-term effects such practices could have on the health of our beneficiaries. As Municipalities in all those areas reportedly cut electrical supplies when they were available, it is safe to say that there is no intention whatsoever from public institutions to set up water/electrical points in places where people on the move are currently staying.
Therefore, the implementation of a water-providing project became crucial at this point of such a hot summer. The Collective Aid Subotica team’s project consists of setting up accessible water points, in the form of IBC tanks. As we are aware of power dynamics in squats, as well as the strong presence of smuggling networks in most of our locations, those water points would be established in neutral spaces equally accessible to every member of the community. Each tank will be equipped with a tap and refilled by our team during each of our outreach shifts, with the help of a pump and a generator (twice a week). The tanks will be cleaned every week with chlorine.
Providing water to these populations in this way will only be possible as long as the temperatures outside are above 0ºC. In Winter my team will have to change its strategy for water supply. Hence, this fundraising has as goal to finance the setting up of these water points and the filling up of the tanks during the next Summer and Autumn months. The forecast of the total costs is around 1000€, which can be divided into:
5 IBC tanks = 80€ x 5 = 400€
1 Generator 800 W = 120€
1 Water Pump = 170€
Water pipes and gasoline = ~300€

All your help is very much appreciated and urgently needed!
Thank you!
