Water for Pishu Village

Donation protected
Pishu Village, located deep in the Himalayas in Zanskar Valley, is one of the highest and most remote human habitats on earth. Villagers have traditionally relied on glacial melt to irrigate their crops.  Due to climate change, the glaciers above their village are now gone and only seasonal snowfall remains.

In 2018, they did not have enough water to grow crops resulting in the death of many of their livestock. This past winter the snowfall was even worse and the community is anxious about what will be their fate this summer.

Working closely with Lobzang Wangtak, a local community leader in Zanskar, Pishu has developed a plan to solve their water crisis. Their project will use a solar water pump to lift water from the Zanskar River to a reservoir above the village. They have been working on this plan for three years, and with the little snow this past winter, the urgency to find funding is now immediate.

We need to raise $7,000 by April 30th to get the pump in place in time for the summer. And then another $18,000 to complete the long-term project. More details can be found here: https://navikarana.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Pishu-Solar-Powered-Water-Lift-Project.pdf

I have been fortunate to spend six summers in Zanskar. These are some of the kindest and most resourceful people I have ever met. Lobzang, in particular, is an inspiring young leader and committed to solving water scarcity issues in his community. I feel grateful to call him a friend.

Please help me in supporting Pishu’s effort to bring water back to their village.
