Water for Lombok

Donation protected
On Sunday the Island of Lombok was shaken by an 6.9 magnitude earthquake. As of now the fatality count is up to 331 individuals who have lost their lives.

We are raising money to provide immediate relief and clean drinking water to the people on Lombok Island in Indonesia.

More than 2.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water at home. That number grows exponentially in crisis stricken areas such as the water locked islands of Indonesia such as Lombok, which is geographically positioned to be more susceptible to natural disasters such as fooding, volcanoes and earthquakes such as the lastest string of quakes and tremors which have shaken the island over the past few weeks.

This makes disaster relief extremely challenging for both domestic and international first responders, living the people who call this area home without water to drink and cook.

A couple of years ago we worked directly with these fisherman on a pilot project to cross the digital divide called mFish. Ampenan Village in Lombok became the first pilot area for mFish. We developed a trusted network of local partners on the island and formed a relationship with the fisherman in Ampenan that continues to this day.

After speaking with our local partners and verifying their safety after the initial earthquake Sunday, as well as the safety of the fishermen in Ampenan, we heard reports that they were forced to evacuate to nearby fields where they have set up tents for temporary housing and no longer have access to clean water for cooking and drinking. We immediately came up with a collective strategy to provide quick relief.

Steps for action:
1.  We connected directly with our trusted local partner. Wiriawan Hadisaputra (aka: Wawan) is employed by the Indonesian mobile operator XL Axiata and is based in Mataram, Lombok. He continues to provide daily updates through WhatsApp messages, pictures and videos on the status in Lombok. (please see blog link for videos and more images)
2.  Local partner surveys conditions of the area and confirmed via pictures and text the the areas have no clean drinking water.  He also recognized the need for instant noodles and baby diapers. He checked with local businesses to ensure us that there is clean water available but considering the economic level of the fishermen they are unable to afford it.
3. We are working with a partner (& former colleague) based in Jakarta who has expertise in the area to advised us on the adequate amount of funding needed for initial payment to purchase clean drinking water to be distributed to the single village for immediate relief.
4. Payment is wire transferred from my American bank account at Chase Bank, Sending from: Emily Roetzel
5. Our partner confirms receipt of funds in their Indonesian bank account (via screen shots ) Payable to: Wiriawan Hadisaputra - Marked with note: For donation of water and supplies to Lombok villages effected by the earthquake
6. Water is purchased using funds with inventory purchased and receipts sent via photo for proof of payment
7. Water is distributed to the  fishermen of Ampenan  in their evacuation zone

Villages where supplies are distributed:
1. Ampenan village (8/10/18)
2. Bintaro pondok perasi
3. Tanjing Karang
4. Gading Beach
5. Sambi Jengkel (North Lombok where all the fishing houses were completely destroyed)

Funds raised are re-imbursment from the money already sent to Lombok. The fishermen have expressed their immense thankfulness and in return have agreed to help our local partner continue to distribute supplies to other victims of the earthquake.  Any additional funds will be used to sustain the aid we provide.

We will repeat the steps above with our local partner as many times as needed until local aid efforts are able to access the areas and sustain relief.

You can be assured that your money donated has already been put to work to provide immediate relief to those in crisis, but more is needed to sustain the aid we are providing.
