WE ARE COLLECTING FUNDS TO RESTORE TWO 500 M3 CISTERNS TO IMPROVE THE LONG-TERM ACCESS TO SAFE WATER FOR MORE THAN 600 PEOPLE.                                                      

In Casamance, in the village of Eloubaline, 600 people depend on three rainwater cisterns as water supply (drinking, cooking, hygiene, etc.). Unfortunately, two cisterns are broken, without a roof to protect the water from contamination and evaporation, thus exposing villagers to waterborne diseases and water scarcity.

IN JANUARY 2022, WE WILL REPAIR ELOUBALINES' WATER CISTERNS THANKS TO A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT INVOLVING LOCAL CRAFTSMEN, THE VILLAGERS AND A TEAM OF YOUNG CRAFTSMEN FROM BRUSSELS.

This project is a collaboration between the association People of Hope, the NPO Awake and a group of friends from Brussels that are in the construction trade.

The project is in line with People of Hope's actions in the same community since 2018, including the distribution of water purification filters and the repair of a water cistern.

ELOUBALINE
Eloubaline is a small island, deep in the mangroves of the river Casamance, in southern Senegal. On the island, the groundwater is salty, thus no wells can be dug.  The 3 cisterns (2x 500 m3, 1x200 m3) fill up only during the rainy season, from June to September.  The drawing of water from the cisterns is limited to 120L per household per week. When the cisterns get dry, villagers are forced to paddle miles away with canoes to fetch water.

 

THE PROBLEM

The cisterns are 40 years old, and their roofs got destroyed by humidity, rust, and wind. The degraded state of the cisterns leads to poor water quality and water scarcity.

Poor water quality:

Without a well-constructed roof, the sun hits the water directly and warms it up, leading to the proliferation of algae, bacteria, and insects. Animals can enter the cistern to drink and defecate. Further, dust and dirt enter too. The quality of the water thus dramatically deteriorates and can provoke dangerous waterborne diseases when the water is consumed, leading to poor health, diseases, high costs of health treatment, or death.

 

Water scarcity:

No roof means less rain harvesting and greater evaporation. The cisterns are empty long before the end of the dry season. The villagers are forced to frequently paddle to other villages which leads to a significant loss of time and energy for other income generating-activities or education.

OUR SOLUTION

LET'S FIX ELOUBALINES' CISTERNS WITH A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT!  
By fixing the cisterns and building new roofs, the water will be protected, harvested, and preserved more efficiently!
The project will improve the long-term access to safe water by a robust and sustainable repair of the cisterns. We will use better construction techniques, materials, and equipment, such as more comprehensive wood sections for the roof trusses, high-quality stainless-steel fasteners for the sheet metals, to make sure the repair will last for decades!

 

 

 

THE PLAN

By the end of November, a team of 5, including a professional carpenter, will sail from the Canary Islands aboard the AWAKEBOAT 'La Joia del Mar' to Senegal and anchor in Eloubaline. This team will bring equipment (generator, battery-powered tools, stainless-steel fasteners), gather materials locally (wood, metal sheets, more devices), and organize the worksite with the villagers and the local contractor.

Mid-January, we will enter the construction phase. A dozen volunteers from Europe, including carpenters, masons, ironworkers, engineers, and architects will travel to Eloubaline. Altogether, with the local community members and volunteers, we will restore the cisterns during a fifteen to twenty-day project.

We need 28.000 euros to implement the project and cover the following costs:

IMPACT

The restoration of the cisterns will respond to Eloubaline's urgent need and significantly improve water quality and availability for the next decades for 600 people, including many children.
This project is in line with our former actions in Eloubaline.  In 2018, we distributed water purification filters in 7 villages, to improve the quality of the water drawn from the cisterns. (read more about our past projects below on this page)

The project will involve villagers in all parts, from planning to construction. 
The project will create employment for the local contractor and the local workers.

Further, the village will acquire tools, a fuel-powered generator, and additional materials to maintain the cisterns.

Our goal is to sustainably strengthen our relationship with the community. 


PHILOSOPHY
Our project is : 

- Collaborative: villagers are involved in all parts of the achievement, with joint meetings for planning, by working on-site and realizing an artistic painting on the concrete tank, including the children of Eloubaline.

- Voluntary: our European team is exclusively voluntary. Local volunteers will also be involved during the whole process. The only people receiving a wage are the local contractor and a couple of local workers assisting us on the project. The European team is traveling to Senegal at its own expense. The sailing boat will receive support from the project as a means of transport for volunteers and equipment and accommodation during two months in Senegal. 

- Inclusive: volunteers of all ages, gender, origin, and social background are welcome on the project.


WHO WE ARE
To help Eloubaline, a collective of volunteers and friends from all over Europe teamed up. We are a collaboration of the association The People of Hope  and the Non-Profit Organisation AWAKE Water for Kids  and several professionals from Brussels that are in the construction trade (CUSTOM CUT , Woodman Be, etc.)
OUR COMMON GOAL IS TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO SAFE WATER 
 
People of Hope is an association striving for a better world respecting human rights and nature. Our work is to help populations lacking access to safe water, support marginalized communities in their emancipation, and take action to protect the environment. Since 2017, The People of Hope has worked in Casamance, south Senegal, supporting rural villages lacking access to safe water.

AWAKE stands for 'Awareness for Kids Education' and is a community founded in April 2016. Our goal is to inspire as many people as possible, to help us provide children with the essential resources for their individual development. Our work focuses on ensuring the holistic well-being of children within underprivileged regions. For the past five years, AWAKE has worked with local institutions and schools in the Dominican Republic, Indonesia, and Senegal.

FORMER PROJECTS OF THE PEOPLE OF HOPE (more about this in full project report)

In 2018, The People of Hope implemented a similar project and repaired a cistern in Bandial, a neighboring village of Eloubaline.  Additionally, they distributed 222 portable filters in 7 villages, including Eloubaline. These filters have a life expectancy of 10 years and improve water quality for 200 families and five schools for the next decade.

NOUS RECOLTONS DES FONDS POUR RÉNOVER DEUX CITERNES A EAU POTABLE DE 500 M3 ET OFFRIR UN MEILLEUR ACCES A L'EAU A 600 PERSONNES

 

En Casamance, à Eloubaline, 600 villageois dépendent de trois citernes à eau de pluie pour l'approvisionnement en eau douce (boisson, cuisine, hygiène, etc.). Deux citernes sont dans un état désastreux, sans toits pour protéger l'eau des contaminations et de l'évaporation. Les villageois font face à la pénurie d'eau et à des maladie hydriques.

EN JANVIER 2022 NOUS REALISERONS LES TRAVAUX GRACE A UN CHANTIER PARTICIPATIF INCLUANT DES ARTISANS LOCAUX, LES VILLAGEOIS ET DES JEUNES  ARTISANS DE BRUXELLES.

Ce projet est une collaboration de l'association People of Hope, l'OSBL Awake et un groupe d'amis artisans.

Celui-ci s'inscrit dans la continuité des acrions menées par People of Hope dans la même communauté depuis 2018, notamment la distribution de filtres purificateurs d'eau et la rénovation d'une citerne.

ELOUBALINE

Sur cette île perdue dans la mangrove du fleuve Casamance au Sénégal, 600 villageois ont un accès limité à l'eau potable. Le fleuve étant salé, impossible de creuser des puits. A part la pluie, il n'y a pas d'eau douce sur Eloubaline. Les trois citernes à eau de pluie se remplissent à la saison humide entre Juin et Septembre. Le reste de l'année, il ne pleut plus et chaque foyer a le droit de puiser 120L d'eau à la citerne, par semaine... La saison sèche dure 9 mois et les citernes se vident avant le retour des pluies. Alors, les villageois embarquent sur leurs pirogues et rament plusieurs heures jusqu'à la prochaine source. 

 

LE PROBLEME
Les citernes ont plus de 40 ans et leurs toits sont détruits par l'humidité, la rouille et le vent. L'état dégradé des citernes atteint la qualité et la disponibilité de l'eau.

Détérioration de l'eau

Sans toit, le soleil rayonne directement sur l'eau et la réchauffe, entraînant la prolifération d'algues, de bactéries et d'insectes. Les animaux sauvages peuvent accéder à l'eau, la boire, la contaminer, tout comme les poussières et les saletés. La qualité de l'eau se détériore. Les conséquences de sa consommation sont variées : mauvaise santé, sévères maladies hydriques, coûts de soins de santé, jusqu'à la mort.

 

Pénurie d'eau

Pas de toit signifie peu de surface de collecte de la pluie et beaucoup d'évaporation. Les citernes se vident prématurément. Les villageois perdent énormément de temps et d'énergie à ramer des kilomètres jusqu'à d'autres sources d'eau, au détriment d'activités génératrices de revenus et de l'éducation.

 

NOTRE SOUTIEN
RESTAURONS LES CITERNES D'ELOUBALINE AVEC UN PROJET COLLABORATIF!

En restaurant les citernes et en leur construisant de nouveaux toits, l'eau sera protégée, récoltée et conservée plus efficacement!

Le projet a pour but d'améliorer l'accès à l'eau sur le long terme, la restauration sera robuste et durable. Nous utiliserons des  méthodes constructives, des matériaux et des équipements plus élaborés qu'au départ, notamment plus de bois et de plus grandes sections pour la charpente et de la quincaillerie inox de qualité supérieure.

LE PLAN

Fin Novembre, une équipe de 5, incluant un menuisier professionnel, naviguera des îles Canaries jusqu'au Sénégal, à bord du voilier La Joia del Mar et ira jeter l'ancre à Eloubaline-même. Cette équipe transportera  avec elle du matériel (générateur électrique, outils électro-portatifs, quincaillerie), réunira des matériaux localement (bois, tôles, outils, etc.) et organisera tous les aspects du chantier avec les villageois et un entrepreneur local.

 

Mi-Janvier, une dizaine de volontaires rejoindront la première équipe pour la phase de construction. Principalement Bruxellois, cette équipe de volontaires comprent un charpentier, des menuisiers, un maçon, un ferronnier, des architectes et autres professionnels de la construction. Ensemble, avec les membres de la communauté d'Eloubaline, participants et volontaires locaux, nous restaurerons les citernes au cours d'un chantier participatif qui devrait s'étaler sur 15 à 20 jours.

La restauration comprend les actions suivantes:
- Construction de deux toits de 484m² (nouvelles charpentes de bois, nouvelles couvertures)
- Travaux de maçonnerie sur les deux cuves en bétons (2x500 m3)

- Peintures artistiques sur les citernes réalisées avec les villageois, dont les jeunes

 

CE DONT NOUS AVONS BESOIN
Nous avons besoin de 28 000 euros pour mener à bien ce projet:

- 19 000 euros de matériaux (bois, tôles, quincaillerie, outils, gouttières, peinture,             etc.)
- 1500 euros pour acheminer les matériaux jusqu'à l'île d'Eloubaline

- 800 euros pour payer l'entrepreneur local

- 200 euros pour un générateur électrique

- 2000 euros pour nourrir 5 personnes pendant deux mois et 20 personnes durant 20 jours

- 3000 euros pour les frais de navigation et de maintenance du voilier la Joia del Mar

- 1500 euros pour les imprévus

IMPACT

La restauration répond à la demande du village d'Eloubaline d'améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable de ses 600 habitants, incluant de nombreux enfants.

Ce projet est en phase avec nos réalisations précédentes à Eloubaline et dans la région, à savoir la distribution en 2018 de filtres de purification de l'eau dans 7 villages, afin d'améliorer la qualité de l'eau délivrée par les citernes.

Le projet implique la communauté locale dans toutes ses phases, de la planification à la réalisation afin de s'assurer de sa durabilité.   

Le projet créé de l'emploi pour un jeune entrepreneur local charpentier-soudeur et plusieurs membres de son équipe.

Le village acquiert des outils, un générateur électrique et des matériaux additionnels pour la maintenance des citernes et autres utilités collectives.

 

PHILOSOPHIE

Le projet se veut :
- Collaboratif : grâce à des réunions collectives, des interventions sur le chantier et la réalisation de peintures murales artistiques sur les citernes, la communauté locale participe au projet.

- Bénévole: toute notre équipe européenne, dont des professionnels de la construction, est entièrement bénévole. Des bénévoles sénégalais sont aussi impliqués dans toutes les phases du projet. Les seuls personnes rémunérées sont l'entrepreneur local et quelques travailleurs qui nous assistent sur le projet. Tous les bénévoles étrangers voyagent jusqu'au Sénégal à leurs propres frais. Seul le voilier Joia del Mar reçoit un soutien du projet en tant que moyen de transport d'équipements et de l'équipe, et en tant qu'hébergement durant 2 mois au Sénégal.
- Inclusif: des personnes de tout âge, genre et origine sont invitées à participer au projet.

Un collectif international de bénévoles et d'amis s'associant pour venir en soutien à Eloubaline. Nous sommes le fruit d'une collaboration entre l'association People of Hope  (Espagne/Belgique/Slovaquie), l'association AWAKE water for kids (Allemagne) et des professionnels de la construction Bruxellois (CUSTOM CUT , Woodman BE , etc.).

People of Hope (Les Optimistes) est une association oeuvrant pour un monde plus juste respectant les droits humains fondamentaux et l'environnement. Les Optimistes sont actifs au Sénégal depuis 2017.

PROJETS PRECEDENTS DE PEOPLE OF HOPE

En 2018, Les Optimistes ont déjà restauré la citerne à eau de pluie du village de Bandial, voisin d'Eloubaline. Nous avons aussi distribué 222 filtres purificateurs d'eau dans 5 écoles et 7 villages dont Bandial et Eloubaline. Ces filtres ont une durée de vie de 10 ans et ont amélioré la qualité de l'eau des citernes de 2000 personnes.
