On 9/11/2017, my beloved father Hristo Ginevski, Ph. D. was killed by an incompetent driver. Strong and healthy, very active and popular at 74, my father had been a long-time professor of business history, language culture and regional studies at the branch of Varna Free University in Smolyan, chairman of the Union of Historians in Smolyan, the chairman of Kiril Madzharov community centre and the regional union of the community centres in Smolyan, Bulgaria. The main driving force and tireless organizer in the publication of the Rodopi magazine, Hristo Ginevski had also written and published many books, articles and anthologies on the regional history of his beloved Rhodope mountains in Bulgaria. At the time he was killed, my father was on a business trip, recruiting students for his University! He literally gave his whole life for the culture and education of his community.
During the last sad days I spent at home for his funeral, by his bed I found a document detailing how important it was to build central heating for the community center in our neighborhood of Ustovo in Smolyan. Winters in Bulgaria are snowy and freezing cold! Without central heating, the large auditorium in the Kiril Madzharov Community Center cannot be used during the most active performance season. The rest of the facility, including the library, uses electric space heaters they cannot afford.
In memory of Hristo Ginevski, my kind, optimistic, talented, and patriotic father, with his love for our hometown, to continue his work and to keep his dream alive, I am determined to bring central heating to his community center Читалище Устово within a year. My grandmother had been a custodian at this community center. My father was chairman of the board for over 24 years, never accepting any pay in return. I grew up taking piano lessons there, reading every single book on the library shelves, one by one, watching great movies and concerts in the auditorium. You can see what the building looks like, what excellent library they have and what educational and cultural activities they organize for children and adults at the Facebook page of Читалище Устово.
If you knew and loved Hristo Ginevski, if you know me and my family, if you know and love Ustovo... Smolyan... the Rhodope Mountains... beautiful Bulgaria... community, education and culture... please donate to this fund or directly to Народно Читалище "Кирил Маджаров -- 1866" гр. Thank you to all my amazing friends, relatives and coworkers from Bulgaria, Macedonia, the United States, Canada, and Great Britain who have already donated to this project. The auditorium in Ustovo will remain closed this winter, but should be warm and welcoming everyone next winter!
