Every night in Seattle, roughly 3000 individuals go without shelter (some estimate as many as 5500). According to our own City of Seattle 2018 budget, homelessness is the "most significant policy challenge that the city is currently facing." So why then are invaluable resources like the Women's Referral Center (which helps find shelter for ~200 femme folx a night) and the Women's Hygiene Center (which provides essential, life saving care to womxn experiencing homelessness) being cut from the budget?
The City states we are "moving toward more 24-hour, low-barrier shelter options that do not require sobriety or identification for admission and can accommodate
couples, pets and people’s possessions" however they have no plan in place to manage the needs of the individuals affected by these budget cuts in the meantime.
While the philosophy and long-term plan may sounds positive, there is no immediate plan.
Warm for Winter is a small group of dedicated individuals who have a history of organizing and providing care to Seattle's most resilient and vulnerable community of folx living outdoors. Because the municipal government has proven itself ineffective in supporting or managing this crisis, we believe at this time we have a responsibility to try and support our neighbors ourselves.
Last year, we provided 70+ individuals with hygiene kits, snack packs and the option of shopping in a free pop-up store of warm clothing. This year, Warm for Winter is teaming with a group of registered nurses to double that target and serve 200+ individuals with similar services as last year (including a personalized hygiene kit, snack pack, and free warm clothing options) while also offering a individualized foot care and health screenings.
In order to do so, we need your help! Please consider making a donation to help support a project aimed at benefiting a small percent of our neighbors living without shelter.
While efforts like this are only a drop in the bucket (serving 200 individuals will still be less than 1% of the population living outdoors), your donation of $10 will provide a hygiene kit for an individual in need. $20 will provide hygiene and food.
If you'd prefer to donate in-kind, we have drop boxes located at Victory Louge, the Vera Project, Lucky Liquor and all Soung Gig shows until the end of 2017.

Thank you for considering and may we also recommend emailing, writing or calling your city council person and our new mayor to let them know that you value the lives of our neighbors experiencing homelessness and that you want to see the city consider long term solutions, while continuing to fund the services that are currently keeping people alive.
