Giving the gift of warmth this season for the cold winters ahead …
Unfortunately, in the poorest and coldest places, some people do not have so much as a simple blanket to keep them warm and remind them that the world cares.
The residents of the village of Haodiping, in Gansu Province, China, are living in desperate poverty, lacking even basic comforts.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit and interact with some of the locals, and I was deeply impressed by the generosity and kindness of these people who have so little, yet open up their homes and lives to strangers.
The name Haodiping literally translates to Good Flat Land, but this is a tragically ironic misnomer. Instead, it is a rugged, mountainous region with a collection of tiny communities perched at an altitude of 2,200 meters, with barren soil and a shockingly low family income, which averages at most $600 per year. This particular village comprises no more than 300 households, and shares a rudimentary school and simple public facilities with other remote villages.
What struck me most was the biting mountain cold and the fact that most residents do not own even one warm blanket, a commodity that we so often take for granted.
This picture shows a typical sleeping arrangement for a family of villagers living at Haodiping. Notice the low adobe platform covered in old, worn mats. This crude bed – traditionally known as a Kang – is built up out of earth and other inexpensive, locally-available materials. It contains a hollow space. Tinder is placed inside and set alight in hopes that heat from the fire will rise up and protect the user from freezing. There are no mattresses, no comforters, no sheets, no quilts, and no pillows. For these families, rudimentary bedding could literally mean the difference between life and death.
Please consider giving the gift of warmth and comfort this season.
All donations will be dedicated to purchasing new, clean, warm blankets. Our goal is to provide at least two packages of blanket for each family of the village.
I will personally oversee all the donated funds to make sure they are sent directly to the organization providing the blankets. In exchange, the organization providing the blankets will arrange for us to receive the blankets in mainland China. Finally, I will personally travel with the blankets to the village of Haodiping to make sure they end up in the hands of those who need them most.
We are hoping to raise the funds as soon as possible, so that the residents of Haodiping will not need to endure another winter without warmth. If we can receive the necessary funds before September 2018, we will have sufficient time to purchase the blankets, ship them to mainland China and hand-deliver them to the recipients before the beginning of next winter.
