Wardan Yorgas Fundraising
Hi There !!
Our names are Brianna Ozies (Djugan woman from Derby) and Shelley Cable (Noongar woman from Perth), and together we are the Wardan Yorgas (Women of the Ocean in Noongar). We are attempting to be the first all-Indigenous duo to cross the Rottnest Channel in the upcoming Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim on February 25th, 2017.
As an all-Indigenous duo, swimming to Rottnest is highly symbolic. You may be aware that Rottnest Island was a penal colony where many Aboriginal men were sent, and some 400 ancestors remain buried there today. Many men attempted to swim back to the mainland to escape lifeon the island, and most perished in the process.
For us, the Wardan Yorgas, swimming in the opposite direction from Whadjuk (Perth) to Wadjemup(Rottnest Island) is a true symbol of reconciliation, which represents our acknowledgment of the past and our commitment to a united and reconciled future. We would like to ask for your support in making this a reality.
We require funding of $5000, or in-kind support for a vessel, crew, supplies and team kit. As well as financial support for Rottnest fees and training.
We are in desperate need of a boat(5.0m or greater), a skipper and a kayak and paddler. If you or anyone you know would be able to help , please send them our way.
We greatly appricate any amount of donations, every cent counts.
Kind regards,
The Wardan Yorgas
