As many of you have heard, Wally Whalen was hit by a car on June 7, 2017. He sustained a major spinal cord injury and was in intensive care for 3 weeks. On June 30th he was transferred to the Spinal Cord Innovation floor at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab (formerly, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) where he is making steady progress.
During his most recent care team meeting, Wally's therapy team set a projected discharge at the end of the September, at which point he will begin outpatient therapy. Wally is super excited to come home, but the reality of his situation poses many challenges. Besides the physcial challenges Wally faces, there are mounting medical bills and household expenses that are daunting. As a carpenter, Wally has relied on his arms and legs to provide for his family, and on June 7th his ability to provide financially for them was put on hold.
We have been in awe of the amount of love and support our family has received from all of you. Many of you have asked how you can help, and at this time we would like to relieve some of the financial burden on Wally and Mary by setting up this GoFundMe page.
