Wallingford Workcamp Materials Fund

Donation protected
On July 8, 2018, approximately 500 youth group members and volunteers from across the country will arrive in Wallingford, Connecticut to participate in Wallingford Workcamp, a community-wide effort that culminates in a one week gathering of campers who will perform hands on home repair projects for those in need in the Wallingford area regardless of faith – at no cost to the homeowner.  The First Congregational Church of Wallingford is sponsoring the Wallingford Workcamp and is organizing the Wallingford Workcamp Team, which will be comprised of volunteers, businesses and churches in the Wallingford area. As with any undertaking of this magnitude, there are also financial needs.  The Wallingford Workcamp Team is obligated to raise a minimum of $25,000 by March 31, 2018, which will be used to purchase construction materials.

Wallingford Workcamp Overview

During the Wallingford Workcamp, repairs will be completed on approximately 60 homes in the area by working alongside Group Mission Trips . The work will range from roof repairs to construction of wheelchair ramps to painting.  Individual resident homeowners are invited to submit applications here for consideration by the Wallingford Workcamp Team. Projects will be assessed based on the nature of the work as well as the applicant’s need. In addition to the home repair work, the resident homeowners often benefit from exposure to community focused youth.

With all of the campers housed at Sheehan High School during the week of Wallingford Workcamp, the Town of Wallingford will take advantage of the event to test its Emergency Preparedness Plan as the high school would serve as a shelter in the event of an emergency.  As such, not only will the community benefit from the repair work completed but also from the critical testing to be completed.  In addition, there will be an economic boost as a result of the purchase of supplies and the support of local businesses by the campers.

This also a fabulous opportunity for the campers to learn new construction and problem solving skills, build relationships with each other and the resident homeowners, and experience the gift of time and talent.
