Walking 100 miles for Breast Cancer Now

In July 2018, I lost my mum, Cathy, to secondary breast cancer, aged 48. With the anniversary looming, I’d like to raise money for Breast Cancer Now; a charity whose goal is to make sure, by 2050, that everybody diagnosed with breast cancer lives. No more mums, cousins, friends or family lost because of the disease. With thousands of loved ones lost every year because of a horrifically common disease, Breast Cancer Now is a fantastic charity with a vision that everybody should get behind.

Despite my own physical compromises, I will be attempting to walk 100 miles in 72 hours, trekking from Grimsby Town Football stadium to the beautiful Peak District, where I aim to climb several of the highest points, finishing at the tallest, Kinder Scout, rounding off the 100 miles and hopefully within 3 days of setting off.

I am not physically fit, I haven’t trained and I expect it will be incredibly testing, but of course it will be nothing compared to the exhausting, heartbreaking journey that so many sufferers of breast cancer have to endure. And with charities like Breast Cancer Now doing remarkable work, by 2050 nobody will ever have to go through the ordeal; an ordeal that I can neither begin to comprehend experiencing in first person nor commit to words the feeling of watching the person that brought me into the world slip away despite awe-inspiring strength of mind and an absolutely unparalleled will to beat it. At the moment, cancer can take away anybody, anytime, regardless of how incredible their spirit may be or how strongly they fight the disease. If any one person on Earth could beat it through sheer willpower, it was my mum. But somehow it still got the upper hand.

Breast cancer has to stop leaving families incomplete, and by raising money for charities such as Breast Cancer Now, we can make sure it doesn’t take anymore beautiful people. In 30 years’ time, with your support, we can make sure it never happens again.

So, in a few weeks’ time, I will be setting off on a 100-mile walk from Grimsby to Kinder Scout. Please donate whatever you can afford, and let’s help fund the fight against a terrible - but one day completely survivable - disease.
