Our Story

When Keith Casey heard the dreadful news of what had happened to his friend Cher, he was deeply shocked and devastated. He has been a friend of Cher and Mark's, and the whole family for over 30 years, since their childhood years of being in the same secondary school.

Keith is a 50 year old ex Army Veteran, and wanted to do something positive to help out his friend and her family.

After speaking to Mark and the family about it, Mark suggested a Parachute jump, but Keith was having none of it, he may be ex Army and brave, but his fear of heights was too great!!

So Keith came up with a plan of his own. He is doing a solo unassisted 150 Mile walk around North Wales.  His plan is to cover 30-35 miles per day over 3 nights & 4 days. He will start at Connahs Quay, Flintshire, heading down the coast towards Talacre continuing past towards Rhos on Sea, Abergwyngregyn, Bangor and eventually LLanberis, at this point he will turn around and make his way back, finishing at Connahs Quay (hopefully someone will have a nice cold pint waiting for him in a beer garden if lockdown restrictions allow!)

The walk itself is gruelling enough, but he is also doing this with a tent and everything he needs to survive in a bag on his back, there will be no nice hotel rooms or nice comfortable sleep in between, he will be literally setting up camp along the way.

Keith's reason for doing this is simple, he wants to help a Friend in need. If he can make the slightest bit of difference to Cher, to help her overcome her life changing illness, then it will all be worth it.

Please dig  deep to support Keith on this journey.

Cher's Story

Cher is a 46 year old mother of two, who lives in the Flintshire area with her partner of 29 years Mark.

Last October  Cher became ill, with what we initially thought was Covid19, but over the next day or two she became seriously ill, Mark called an ambulance and they literally saved her life outside of their home. Cher had contracted Meningococcal  Septicemia and within 20 minutes of arriving at the Countess of Chester Hospital was put into an induced coma. For the next 23 days she was fighting for her life, hour by hour critical, she had multiple organ failure and remained on multiple life support machines. Her chances of survival were 20% at best, so she had a big fight on her hands.

Against all odds, Cher started to get stronger, and eventually after 39 days in Intensive Care, was released onto a ward. Her fight didn't end there though, she then got Pneumonia and later, at the end of Nov caught Covid too.

Due to the Meningococcal  Septicemia, Cher had suffered extreme damage to her hands and feet, and lost her spleen. She remained in the Hospital for 3 months as the Doctor's battled to save her hands and feet. All of  the time in the hospital she was alone and desperate to see her family, especially her children. As well as the physical pain, she was really suffering mentally too.

Cher was allowed home on Christmas Eve for a few weeks under the care of district nurses, and was readmitted back to hospital in January.

The devastating news came that the Doctor's had done all they could in the battle to save her feet, and she had to have both of her legs amputated  below the knee in early February 2021.

Cher has since been released from Hospital and is recuperating at home, but their home is no longer accessible for Cher, Cher is unable to get around the house, she is unable to access the main bathroom and her bedroom. She has a hospital bed and a commode in her living room. She has no access to get into the garden.

This is why the good people in her community are fundraising, the aim is to help Cher make structural changes to her home, so that it is fully accessible to her, and her family can gain back their living room space.

We want to make a difference to Cher,  so she can focus on rebuilding her life with the best possible start.
