At Chrysta, we teach students with a range of different needs, who require supports above and beyond what is available even in a well supported regular classroom. Some of these students have special needs and some students are mainstream students wanting additional help.
We recognize each of our children as unique individuals who come into their own when they are taught skills that extend far beyond the scope of traditional academics. For instance, tasks that most people take for granted, such as dressing and eating, can be a true daily grind for a child with special needs; which is why we teach self-management and self-care in order to foster independence. Similarly, if anxious behaviours inhibit learning, we introduce exercise and breathing routines, giving them tools to face their challenges.
In recognizing their struggle, we use their existing strengths as starting points, allowing them to gain confidence as they recognize their own accomplishments. As they learn to self-direct their work, they move towards the ultimate goal of integration into mainstream environments.
We believe that families are the key to the success of every child, and engage them every step of the way. And through everything, we focus on making learning fun!
Chrysta Learning Centre consists of a full-time program and a part-time program. The part-time program has been operational since September 2017, and the full-time program became operational in September 2018. However, our application to obtain independent school status wasn't accepted because the Ministry of Education is not currently designating any new Special Education Schools. Without independent school status, Chrysta will not receive any funding towards operating costs; additionally, the funding per student drops by $5,000. The result is a deficit of $50,000 for the academic year, and our goal is to raise this amount through various fund-raising events.
“Walk With Chrysta” is the first of our fundraisers. We are partnering with Autism Speaks Canada , and 10% of all donations will go to them.
