The silent epidemic of MMIW-Missing Murdered Indigenous Women has affected Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit (LGBTQ) (MMIWG2S) peoples for over 500 years since first settler contact in the so called USA. Indigenous women and girls go murdered at rate 10 x higher than the national average, and 1 in 3 will endure violence in their lives. Our stories are often left out of mainstream media and data, which means less awareness and proper lopp resources for us to effectively address these issues of violence, prevent them, and heal from them. Most actions taken to address the many issues of MMIW are led by grassroots efforts, as we can not wait for elected officials to come to our aid in a timely fashion.
Our grassroots group is made up of many indigenous women from across the state of WI, and represents MMIWG2S families, survivors of violence, coalitions, rural and urban areas, traditional indigenous elders, and formal agency service providers. We are the experts with lived and formal experiences that can help us serve our indigenous women, girls, and two spirit relatives in a way that is culturally founded, connected to our original indigenous oral history/land, and protects water, mother earth, and future generations. Central to our wellbeing as indigenous peoples, especially women, is our connection to water protection and our mother earth.
All of our services, trainings, and tools are available to our communities at no cost, in order to create a just system of care. This means we will need your help to make this vision come true. Your donation will help bring healing and justice to our MMIWG2S families and survivors of sexual violence.
Examples of where funding will go:
-direct MMIWG2S family services ( investigators, lawyers, media campaigns, healing work, women's retreats, financial support)
-prevention of violence work- trainings, program tools to connect to original indigenous culture ( traditional midwifery, healing ceremony, water protection
-emergency housing
- direct services
- culture based healing work such as land retreats
-systems change- utilizing research and practice based evidence to create equitable and accessible systems that address systemic violence and policy that harms Indigenous Women, Waters, and Mother Earth
