Did you know that black people make $1.1 trillion dollars of which only 2% lands in the hands of black businesses? Are you aware of the startling statistic which shows how little our dollar circulates in our community compared to that of others.
What if I told you that second only to the government, black businesses are the leading employers of black people in this country. BUT, black businesses only get a 2% chance to impact change and dent the joblessness that ails our people.
Essentially, we can create more jobs for our people just by supporting and buying black! We have the power to change our own situation by intentionally, consciously supporting black business. It is literally in our OWN hands!
Wadada Healthy Market & Juice Bar will serve as the first black woman owned vegan health food store to come to the historic West End. This is significant for many reasons. One is that the West End, evidenced by the name of its main thoroughfare, Ralph David Abernathy Blvd, has a rich culture and history that should be preserved. Wadada Healthy Market and Juice Bar will join a multitude of thriving black businesses including some such as Shrine of the Black Madonna and Willie Watkins Funeral Home nearing and exceeding 40 years of service.
In addition, the West End is fast becoming a healthy hub powered by a mix of established pioneers in the health industry such as Soul Vegetarian of 20+ yrs with relatively newer black-owned healthy restaurants and farms within a small radius, being referred to as “the vegan one mile.”
It is also a diverse center for high cultural activity and home to several HBCUs within walking distance, including Spelman, Morehouse & Clark Atlanta University. Even as the threat of gentrification looms…we are currently witnessing a burgeoning of black culture and business at a time when black businesses are being displaced and are most at risk. This serves as an inspiration to many facing the same ills around the country. The spirit of resistance is high to protect the deep history of the West End and ensure this contribution does not get erased as developers change the landscape of the community.
The opening of a health food store/juice bar is most vital as we see a serious health crisis in the black community that is quite alarming. African Americans monopolize the death statistics in heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, and more. It is startling to see the younger generation afflicted with “old folks” diseases and it is just as unsettling to see that we are losing a very important sector of our society, the elderly. The value and wisdom that the elderly can pass down has been severely diminished by poor health and early exits. The saddest and unfortunate part is these diseases are often preventable.
It is the mission of Wadada Healthy Market & Juice Bar to work on several fronts to address the needs of the community by
> providing accessibility and affordability to local and organically grown produce
> addressing the health crisis that disproportionately affects the black community by bringing healthier choices and
offering freshly made juices and beverages of many healing benefits
> working with local black farmers that seek a steady outlet to serve their community, this in turn helps to sustain the
local economy and increase circulation of the black dollar
> forging a way for us to take control of food distribution in our own communities and not be at the mercy of big box stores
nor to foods of inferior quality
> promoting a return to what is simple and natural through education and accessibility
> partnering with local chefs, health influencers and organizations that are bringing awareness to a healthy lifestyle
Taking ownership of our health is important...history tells us that when we place basic needs in the care of others, like big box stores who are driven by profit then we will be SICK and statistics show our life span is on the decline…
Working with local farms….this helps to bring the freshest, most nutritious food possible to your table and supports the local economy. Imagine getting food just harvested that day or that week as opposed to food traveling from over hundreds to thousands of miles away and harvested months ago.
Offering healthy juices, full of vitality, as a means to healing to counter the deep depletions in vitamins and minerals (malnourishment) that result in disease due to devitalized foods from unhealthy growing practices.
Providing the access, affordability and education to the community by way of partnering with local chefs, health influencers and other organizations that can bring about an awareness and change in how we view food to encourage healthier choices that will have generational impact.
We are knocking at the door and need that final push…because of capital constraints we have divided our project into two phases. The first being the juice and smoothie bar and the second being the health food store. With your help we can finish the first phase immediately and build out the second phase within the next few of months.
