Save Captain's Life

Donation protected
Captain came into the Jenkins household in 2012. We rescued him from the Animal Aid Society out of Hampton VA.  In April of 2015 Captain came in contact with a raccoon that tested positive for rabies. Luckily he was current with all of his vaccinations. We took him the day after for a rabies booster shot. Right at a month after the first raccoon, Captain brought a dead raccoon up to the house. We took all precautions, had the raccoon sent off to be tested for rabies. We were notified close to a week after that the second raccoon did test positive for rabies. We were under the assumption that since we had just had a rabies booster and since Captain was current on his vaccinations that no further shots were needed. Unfortunately North Carolina law states that any animal that comes in contact with a rabid animal must have a booster within five days. Since we did not know this and it was a delayed time on having the second raccoon tested we were ordered to surrender Captain to the Mecklenburg County Health Department. We were told we had two options, euthanizing our family pet or mandatory six month quarantine at the owner’s expense. There are few animal hospitals that are equipped to quarantine animals that have been exposed to rabies. The cost can be $1,000 plus per month, therefore six months will add up quickly. Even though we were assured by our Veterinarian there was no way he could contract rabies we are still faced with these two options. Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Control came on 6-2-15 to seize Captain. We have 72 hours (3 days) to try and raise the money so we can save Captain. We have tried every angle with the Health Department even showing proof that all his rabies vaccinations are current. I don't want to see Captain a part of our family euthanized. Therefore I would like to ask for your help whether small or big to help raise the money for this costly six month quarantine. If we are able to reach our goal, any extra money raised will be split between the Humane Society of Charlotte and Animal Aid Society.

Thank You,
Lawson Jenkins
